Which is the best wire brand in India for home?

The best wire brand in India for home is whichever brand’s coil passes the checks in your hand: copper conductor, the ISI mark with IS 694 and a CM/L licence number printed on the wire, an FR or FR-LSH marking that suits the building, the size your electrician asked for and the full printed length.

Nine national brands list house wire on their own Indian websites: Anchor by Panasonic, Finolex, GreatWhite, Havells, KEI, Orient Electric, Polycab, RR Kabel and V-Guard. We list them alphabetically below and do not rank them.

One thing first, because it shapes everything that follows. We do not make wire. We make switches, sockets and MCBs at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai, and the VIYONA house wire we sell is made for us by a partner to our specification. So this is not a wire maker grading its rivals. It is the view from the other end of the cable: the switch, the socket and the breaker, where every wiring decision in a house ends up.

Which wire brands are sold nationally in India?

Nine national brands list house or building wire for sale on their own Indian websites, and in alphabetical order they are Anchor by Panasonic, Finolex, GreatWhite, Havells, KEI, Orient Electric, Polycab, RR Kabel and V-Guard; that is the whole basis of this list, which is not a ranking and not a complete census.

Anchor by Panasonic Advance FR, COPAPRO FR and Fireguard FR-LSH, each stated to conform to IS 694.

Finolex FR Grade house wire in Gold and Silver, in 90 m coils, plus FRLSH and FinoUltra.

GreatWhite SecureX Standard, Plus and Ultra, the Ultra with ZHFR insulation.

Havells Lifeline FR, Life Guard FR-LSH and Life Shield HFFR, sold as flexible cables.

KEI HomeCab-FR, ConFlame-FRLS and BanFire-ZHFR house wires.

Who owns each wire brand, and how long has it been around?

Seven of the nine national wire brands are listed on Indian stock exchanges, Anchor has been part of Panasonic since 2007 and GreatWhite is a private company, and their founding years run from Orient Electric in 1954 to RR Kabel in 1995, by each company’s own or public record.

Two came to the market recently: Polycab listed 2019 and RR Kabel listed 2023. Orient Electric is part of the CK Birla Group; RR Kabel grew out of the Ram Ratna Group.

Where does a switch and MCB maker fit in a wire article?

Our place is at the other end of the cable, making what the wire connects to: switches since 1995, sockets and MCBs, all made at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai, plus a VIYONA house wire that a partner makes for us to IS 694 under ISI licence, which we sell but do not manufacture.

What we make, and can vouch for directly: switches under IS 3854 licence CM/L-7567794, and a 10 kA MCB under IS/IEC 60898-1 licence CM/L-2544151, from a works certified to ISO 9001:2015. We sell through 500+ dealers across India, not online.

What does IS 694 and the CM/L number on a coil prove?

IS 694 is the Indian Standard for PVC insulated cables for working voltages up to and including 1100 V, and a CM/L number printed with the ISI mark shows that a named factory holds a BIS licence to make that cable to that standard, which you can check yourself in the BIS Care app.

The BIS product manual for IS 694: 2010 shows what a licence covers: the conductor (copper or aluminium, bare or tinned), its class, the insulation type and the category, one of 01, 02, FR or FR-LSH, up to 1100 V. It also asks for a code on the coil’s label or package so the date of manufacture can be traced back to factory records.

What you want to see: ISI mark with CM/L number on the wire. What should stop you: ISI logo with no number or number only on the carton.

What is inside the copper: annealed conductor and IS 8130 class?

In copper IS 694 house wire the conductor is annealed high-conductivity copper, bare or tinned, built to the conductor standard IS 8130, and it comes as a solid or stranded rigid conductor (class 1 or 2) or a flexible one (class 5), which is why two coils of the same size can feel so different in the hand.

The classes, as the international conductor standard IEC 60228 names them: Class 1: solid Class 2: stranded, for fixed installation Class 5: flexible Class 6: very flexible. GreatWhite, for one, lists class 5 conductors for its flexible range. Ours is multi-strand copper.

Several makers print a copper purity figure: 99.97% appears on pages from Anchor, GreatWhite, KEI and V-Guard. Treat it as the maker’s claim. The BIS manual for IS 694 lists a copper purity test among the samples taken under a licence, which is the check behind the number.

What you can measure is resistance per km: less copper, more resistance, more heat. Undersized copper runs hot inside a wall.

FR, FR-LSH, HFFR and ZHFR: what do the letters mean?

FR means flame retardant PVC insulation that resists carrying a flame, FR-LSH adds low smoke and reduced halogen from a modified PVC, and HFFR, which some makers call ZHFR or LS0H, drops PVC for a halogen-free compound, so less smoke and no corrosive halogen gas in a fire.

The letters, spelled out: FR: flame retardant FR-LSH: flame retardant, low smoke and halogen FRLS: an older name for the same idea HFFR: halogen free flame retardant ZHFR: zero halogen flame retardant LS0H: low smoke zero halogen.

Where they sit in the standards: FR and FR-LSH are categories inside IS 694, and the BIS manual adds a smoke density test for FR-LSH. Halogen-free ranges are not PVC, so they are made to a different standard; Polycab and RR Kabel both cite IS 17048 for theirs.

KEI, for one, suggests its halogen-free wire for hospitals, hotels and high-rise buildings, where people must get out through smoke. Our VIYONA wire: FR PVC; if a specification asks for FR-LSH or HFFR, buy wire marked that way.

Which wire size is used for lights, fans and sockets?

House wiring in India commonly uses 1.5 sq mm copper wire for lights and fans and 2.5 sq mm for sockets, with heavier sizes for heavy appliance points and the main line, but your electrician sets the size of every run for its load, its length and how it is laid, to IS 732.

That is common practice, not a prescription: 1.5 sq mm: lights and fans 2.5 sq mm: sockets heavier: heavy points, main line. Run length and how it is laid both change the answer.

How does the MCB rating tie to the wire?

The MCB rating must never exceed what the wire can carry as installed, so the wire is chosen for the circuit first and the breaker second, and a breaker that trips often is a question for your electrician, never a reason to fit a bigger one on the same wire.

This is the part of the circuit we make. Our VIYONA 10 kA MCB is built under CM/L-2544151, and the commonest request at our counter is a bigger breaker because the old one keeps tripping. Wire as installed ≥ MCB rating is the rule. Upsizing the MCB breaks it.

Is a 90 m coil always 90 m?

A 90 m coil should deliver 90 metres, but coil lengths vary by brand and range, with our VIYONA wire in 45 m and 90 m coils and some national ranges, such as Havells Lifeline FR and Polycab Green Wire, listed in 180 m coils, so compare price per metre, never price per coil.

Lengths you will meet: 45 m 90 m 180 m. Price per metre is the only fair comparison, at the same size and grade.

Then check that the coil delivers what it says. Length printed on the label should match what comes off the drum. A short coil is the easiest short-change to miss

How do you spot a fake or short coil?

You spot a fake or short coil by checking the CM/L number in the BIS Care app, reading the size, standard and insulation letters printed on the wire itself, measuring or weighing the coil against what the label promises, and buying from a dealer who will give you a proper bill.

In the order we would do them:

1. CM/L in BIS Care the licence belongs to wire, to IS 694, and is active. 2. Printing on the sheath size, standard, insulation grade and the maker’s name. 3. Batch code on the label the traceability code the BIS scheme asks for. 4. Length measure a coil that feels light. 5. Weight if the maker publishes a coil weight, weigh it; less copper weighs less. 6. Resistance with a meter, against the maker’s stated maximum.

And the plain ones: proper bill from a dealer, no licence number, printing that rubs off, price far below the maker’s MRP.

Which is the best wire company in India for electrical work?

The best wire company for electrical work in India is one whose coil carries a licence you can verify, the insulation grade the building needs, the size your electrician specified and its full printed length, sold by a dealer who will stock the same range again when the next room is wired.

The counter checklist: CM/L verified IS 694 on the wire copper, size on the sheath FR or FR-LSH as specified full length price per metre compared. Walk away from no licence number.
