Modular MCB Boxes: VIYONA SPN, 1 & 2 Way and Double Door

A modular MCB box is the enclosure your MCBs are mounted in, usually on a DIN rail behind a cover that leaves only the breaker handles showing, and it is sized in “ways”: one way for each single pole MCB. We make three kinds in our VIYONA range at our Mumbai works: SPN white line, small PVC surface boxes and double door distribution boxes.

What is a modular MCB box?

A modular MCB box is a distribution box built around breakers of one standard width: each single pole MCB takes one module, or way, a double pole takes two, a three pole three and a four pole four, so the way count on the box tells you how many breakers fit inside it.

How to size an MCB box: count the ways

Size an MCB box by counting ways: one for each single pole MCB, two for each double pole, then add at least two spare ways for circuits you will add later, and pick the box whose way count covers the total. Check separately whether the double pole incomer sits inside the same box or needs ways of its own.

That example comes to 12 ways, so the 10–12 way SPN (373) ₹620 or the 12 way double door (385) ₹1,210 covers it. A double pole AC circuit takes two ways, and incomer inside or separate? is the question for the dealer. Ratings per circuit are in which MCB for home and MCB for AC.

SPN, 1 & 2 way or double door: which MCB box?

Choose an SPN box for an ordinary single-phase flat or shop, a 1 & 2 way PVC box for one or two MCBs on their own, such as a geyser point, and a double door distribution box when you want a door that closes over the breakers or need a three-phase TPN board.

SPN means single pole and neutral, a single-phase board, and is what most homes need: see the SPN white line MCB box. TPN means three pole and neutral, for a three-phase supply. Our MCB distribution double door box comes in both: single-phase from 4 way to 16 way, and TPN in 4, 6 and 8 way.

For one or two MCBs, the 2 modular MCB box people ask for is a small surface enclosure, and ours is the 1 & 2 way PVC surface MCB box, code 375 at ₹40 MRP, or the 1 & 2 way PVC Royal surface MCB box, code 377 at ₹66. For three or four MCBs, the 3 & 4 way PVC surface box, code 376, is ₹90.

An MCB holding plate usually means either a small box like these or a breaker that fits inside the switch board; we do not list a separate plate. Surface or concealed MCB box?

A surface MCB box is fixed on the face of a finished wall, which suits an existing home or one added circuit, while a concealed box is set into a recess cut in the wall during construction or renovation so that only the cover shows. Our 1 & 2 way and 3 & 4 way PVC boxes, codes 375, 376 and 377, are catalogued as surface boxes.
