A door bell for home is a small signalling circuit with two parts. Outside the door sits the bell push, a spring-loaded switch the visitor presses. Inside sits the bell, the unit that makes the ding dong, the tune or the buzz. Press the push and the circuit closes; let go and it opens. It has to do that every time, for years, in rain and dust.

For most Indian homes the best door bell is a wired ding dong or musical bell mounted inside the flat and worked by a bell push beside the main door, because it rings every time, needs no batteries in the push, and lets the family pick a sound, from a plain two-note chime to a devotional tune.
Ding dong The classic two-note chime: short, clear and easy to recognise from another room. Musical Plays a tune instead, for families who want something warmer at the door. Buzzer A flat, steady buzz, the usual pick for offices, clinics and service doors. Wireless A battery push that talks to a plug-in receiver; it suits a rented flat where no cable can be run, but needs fresh batteries and a signal that reaches through walls.

Door bell electric: wired or wireless?
An electric door bell is either wired, with a cable running from the push at the door to the bell inside the home, or wireless, with a battery transmitter at the door and a plug-in receiver inside; for a home that is being built or rewired, wired is usually the more dependable choice.
Wired Typically fitted when the house is wired, with the cable in conduit to the door. After that there is nothing to recharge and no signal to lose, and the push can sit on a modular plate that matches the board beside it.
Wireless Needs no cable, which helps in a finished home. The trade-off is battery changes and a signal that thick walls or a steel door can weaken.
Loose cable Avoid the half-way job: bell wire clipped along the door frame, open to knocks and water. Run it concealed or in conduit like any other circuit.
A wired bell is connected to the home’s supply. Fitting or moving one is electrician’s work: switch off at the distribution board first.
Renovating? Put a bell point and a cable to the main door in the wiring drawing now, not a wall chase later.
The door bell switch: why a bell push is not a light switch

Where should a door bell be placed in a house?
A door bell works best with the push on the latch side of the main door, at the same height as the light switches inside, and the bell mounted in a central passage or hall where it can be heard from the bedrooms and the kitchen, away from steam, water and cooking heat.

Bell in the centre In a flat, the passage between bedrooms and living room is usually the right wall. Under cover Keep the push out of driving rain. Some mount it high, near the ceiling, so the sound carries.

Door bell not ringing? Common causes and safe fixes
A door bell that stops ringing usually has one of four causes: the circuit has tripped at the board, a connection at the push has worked loose, the push itself is worn or wet, or the bell unit has failed; checking them in that order finds most faults quickly and safely.
Check the MCB If other points on the circuit are dead too, the breaker has tripped. Loose push A wobbly push often has a loose terminal. Water A rained-on push can corrode or short; replace it and fix the cover. Bell unit If push and supply are fine, suspect the bell.
