What an LED downlight does
A downlight is a single compact fitting aimed at the floor or work surface below it. Because the light is directed rather than spread in all directions, several downlights are usually spaced across a ceiling to light a room evenly. A panel light works on the same idea but emits light from a flat, wider face, so one panel is normally used where a broad, even wash of light is wanted.
Recessed or surface-mounted

Recessed fittings suit rooms that already have a false ceiling. Surface-mounted fittings suit older flats, shops and sheds where there is no false ceiling, and they can be changed later without cutting into the ceiling. Where downlights and panels are used
Downlights are common in living rooms, bedrooms, passages and bathrooms at home, and in reception areas, cabins, shops and hotel corridors in commercial buildings. They suit these spaces because the fitting is small and can be spaced in a line or a grid to match the room. Panel lights are more common in offices, showrooms, educational institutions and larger shops, where a few flat panels light a wide area with fewer fittings.
