3 Pin Plug Tops: 6A vs 16A, Which Socket Each Fits and How to Wire One
A 3 pin plug is the round-pin plug with a third, larger earth pin that goes on every metal-bodied appliance in an Indian home, and it comes in two sizes that do not swap: 6A for light loads and 16A for heavy ones. Buy the wrong one and it either will not fit the socket or, worse, gets forced into one through an adaptor. This guide covers the two sizes, the pins, which socket each fits, the earth pin and how to wire a plug top, using the plug tops we make in Mumbai and their MRPs as the examples.

What is a 3 pin plug?
A 3 pin plug is the plug on the end of an appliance cable that carries two current pins, live and neutral, plus a third, larger pin for earth, so that a fault current in a metal-bodied appliance has a safe path to ground instead of through the person touching it.
In Indian shops the same thing is called a 3 pin top, a plug top or, in Hindi, a “three pin top”. The word “top” matters: a plug top is sold on its own, without a cable, and is fitted onto the appliance’s flexible cord by the buyer or an electrician. You buy one when an old plug cracks or a cord has been cut short.
In India a round-pin 3 pin plug comes in two everyday sizes, 6 amp and 16 amp, and the two are not interchangeable. Below: the difference, the pins, the sockets, the earth pin and the wiring, with the plug tops we make in Mumbai as examples.
6A vs 16A 3 pin plug: the two sizes
A 6A 3 pin plug is the small one, for light loads: a table lamp, a television, a desktop computer, a pedestal fan, a mixer. A 16A 3 pin plug is the large one, for heavy heating and motor loads: typically the geyser, air conditioner, room heater, iron, microwave and washing machine.
The number is the plug’s current rating: the most current it is designed to carry continuously. Small = 6A When people search for a “small three pin plug”, this is the one they mean. Large = 16A The “power plug” is the 16 amp one.
How heavy a load each plug size is typically used for — an ordering, not a measurement
Bar length shows a rough ordering of how heavy each load is, drawn by us for illustration; it is not a reading in amps or watts. The appliance’s rating plate and manual decide which plug and socket it needs.
A plug rating is a ceiling, not a target. A light appliance on a 16A plug is fine; a heavy appliance on a 6A plug is not.

3 pin plug sizes: pins, spacing and how to tell them apart
You can tell the two sizes apart by eye. On the 6A plug the live and neutral pins are roughly 5 mm thick and the earth pin roughly 7 mm. On the 16A plug everything grows: the live and neutral pins are roughly 7 mm thick, the earth pin thicker still, and all three sit further apart. These round-pin shapes are the ones covered for India by the IS 1293 standard for plugs and socket-outlets.
Hold them side by side Side by side, the 16A plug is visibly bigger in every direction. Read the moulding A good plug top also carries its rating on the body, so you do not have to guess.
Filed pins Never file, bend or pack pins to force a fit. The mismatch is deliberate: thicker pins carry more current with less heating.
If a 3 pin plug will not go into the socket beside the appliance, the socket is doing its job. The answer is the right socket, not a modified plug.
6A for light electronics and lamps; 16A for anything that heats or drives a big motor.
The longer, thicker third pin is the fault path. Never cut, bend or break it.

Which socket does a 3 pin plug fit?
A 6A 3 pin plug fits a 6A 3-pin socket, a 6A “2 in 1 five pin” socket or a combined 6A and 16A universal socket, while a 16A 3 pin plug fits only a 16A socket or a combined 6A and 16A universal socket, and never a 6A socket of any kind.
6A plug goes into a 6A 3-pin socket such as our KEMPS K192 or VIZA Black V1269, into a 2 in 1 five pin socket, which takes 6A 2-pin and 3-pin plugs, or into a combined socket. 16A plug goes into a 16A socket such as VIZA V263 or V264, or into a combined socket. Not a five pin Our “2 in 1 five pin” sockets are 6A; a 16A plug does not belong in them.
Which of our socket types takes each 3 pin plug — categories, not measurements
Bar length shows how many of the two 3 pin plug sizes each socket type accepts, as an ordering drawn by us; it is not a measured value. A 2-pin socket takes neither 3 pin plug.

The earth pin: why the third pin is bigger and longer
The third pin is the earth. On a round-pin Indian plug it is usually both thicker and longer than the other two, and each of those is on purpose. Longer Because it is longer, the earth connects first when you push the plug in and disconnects last when you pull it out, so the appliance body is earthed whenever the live pin is touching. Thicker Because it is thicker, it cannot be pushed into a live or neutral hole.
Shutters In many shuttered sockets the earth pin is also what opens the shutter over the live and neutral holes. Metal bodies Metal-bodied appliances ship with 3 pin plugs because a fault can make the body live.
Earth pin removed Breaking off an earth pin to fit a 2-pin socket leaves a metal appliance with no fault path at all. Earth behind the wall Equally, a perfect plug is only as earthed as the socket wiring it plugs into.
Never cut, bend or break the earth pin of a 3 pin plug. If the only socket nearby is 2-pin, have a 3-pin point installed.
Whether a socket is actually connected to earth cannot be seen from the plate. An electrician tests it with an instrument.
Which appliances need a 16 amp 3 pin plug?
A 16 amp 3 pin plug is typically needed for appliances that heat water or air or drive a large motor: the geyser, split or window air conditioner, room heater, iron, microwave oven or OTG and washing machine, with the refrigerator commonly given a 16A point too, and each of these should land on a 16A socket.

Plug ≠ circuit Fitting a 16A plug top and a 16A socket does not make a point fit for a geyser if the wire behind it was laid for lamps. A licensed electrician sizes that wire and picks the MCB; our guide to which MCB for home explains the ratings they will be choosing between.
Do not replace a 16A plug with a 6A plug top to make a heavy appliance fit a light-duty socket. It moves the weak point, it does not remove it.
How do you wire a 3 pin plug top?
To wire a 3 pin plug top, open the cover, clamp the cable sheath under the cord grip, then connect the live wire to the terminal marked L, the neutral to N and the green-and-yellow or green earth wire to E, with no bare copper showing and every screw tight, before closing the cover.
Brown / red = live Blue / black = neutral Green-yellow / green = earth Newer flexible cords typically use brown, blue and green-and-yellow; older Indian wiring often used red, black and green. Most plug tops mark their terminals L, N and E, so follow the marks rather than a diagram of a different plug.
Earth slightly longer Leave the earth conductor a little longer, so it is the last to pull free if the cable is yanked. Cord grip on the sheath The grip should clamp the outer sheath, not the loose inner wires. Stray strands Twist the strands, trim any that escape and never leave copper outside a terminal.
Switch off and unplug before you open any plug top. If you are unsure which wire is which, stop and ask an electrician: a live-earth swap can make an appliance body live.
A plug top that is clamped, tight and correctly wired should not move when you tug the cable gently. If it does, open it and redo the cord grip.

Light loads A multi plug is for several small loads that together stay well inside the socket’s rating. Adaptor into 6A No conversion plug raises the rating of the socket it sits in: a 16A appliance run through one into a 6A socket still pushes its full load through 6A contacts and 6A wiring.
Never use a multi plug or conversion plug to run a geyser, heater, iron, AC or microwave from a 6A socket. That load needs its own 16A point.
Choosing a good plug top, and when to replace one
A plug top carries the whole load of the appliance, so check it at the counter. Rating on the body The 6A or 16A rating should be moulded on, not only on the box. Maker’s name Buy one that names its manufacturer. Firm pins Pins should not wobble in the body. Real cord grip A proper clamp, not a gap the cable slides through.
Replace now A plug top that is cracked, melted, brown around a pin or warm after use has already been overheating. Loose in the socket If a plug falls out under its own cable’s weight, the socket contacts may be worn too; poor grip means a small contact area, and that is where heat builds. Replace the plug top and the socket together if both show heat marks. A new plug in a scorched socket will not last.
