The 6A vs 16A socket question comes up on every new board and every new appliance. The short version: a 6A socket is for light loads such as chargers, lamps and the television, and a 16A socket is for heavy heating and motor loads such as the geyser, AC, iron and microwave. 6A vs 16A socket: the short answer
The difference between a 6A and a 16A socket is the load each is built to carry. A 6A socket is made for light appliances — phone and laptop chargers, lamps, a television, a router, a table fan. A 16A socket is made for heavy ones — typically the geyser, the air conditioner, a room heater, the iron, the microwave and the washing machine. The number is the socket’s current rating: the most current it is designed to pass through its contacts continuously without overheating.
You can see the difference before you read a label. A 16A socket is physically larger, with bigger holes spaced further apart, because a 16 amp plug has thicker pins. That is deliberate. It means a heavy appliance’s plug simply will not go into a light-duty socket.

Which socket each appliance needs
Most homes need both ratings, and most mistakes come from fitting 6A everywhere because it is cheaper and the plate looks the same. A simple way to sort appliances: anything that makes heat or drives a big motor typically belongs on a 16A point. Anything that runs electronics, light or a small fan typically belongs on a 6A point.

Why a 16A plug will not fit a 6A socket
The pin sizes are the safety feature. A 16A plug has larger, thicker pins than a 6A plug, and the socket holes are sized to match. Thicker metal carries more current with less heating, so the heavy appliance gets a plug and a socket with more metal in the path.
Because the pins do not fit, a heavy appliance cannot be pushed into a light-duty socket by accident. By design If your geyser’s plug will not go into the socket beside it, the socket is doing its job. The fix is a 16A point, not a way round it.
Adaptor into 6A The way round it is the adaptor: a 16A-to-6A converter lets the big plug in, but the load still flows through the 6A socket’s contacts and the wiring behind it, which were chosen for less. That kind of overload does not usually fail at once. It heats, discolours and fails later, sometimes inside the wall — the pattern we describe in switch getting hot or socket sparking.
Never run a heater, geyser, iron, AC or microwave from a 6A socket through an adaptor or a multi-plug. If a room needs a heavy-appliance point, have one installed.
6A for light electronics and lamps; 16A for anything that heats or drives a big motor.

The earth pin and the 3-pin socket
Both ratings come in 3-pin versions: two current-carrying pins and a larger third pin for earth. The earth gives a fault current a safe path away from anything a person can touch, which is why appliances with metal bodies — irons, geysers, washing machines, microwaves — come with a 3-pin plug.

2-in-1 five-pin Our 6A “2 in 1 five pin” sockets are for a light-load point that should accept both 2-pin and 3-pin 6A plugs.
A socket is only as earthed as the wiring behind it. Whether a point is properly connected to earth is something an electrician tests; it cannot be seen from the plate.
Shuttered sockets: why they are worth it
A shuttered socket has a spring-loaded cover behind the face that keeps the holes closed until a plug is inserted. It is there for the child with a hairpin or a key, and for dust in a kitchen or workshop.

The combined 6A and 16A “universal” socket
A combined or universal socket accepts both a 6A and a 16A plug in one outlet. It is useful where you cannot predict what will be plugged in: a kitchen counter where a mixer and a microwave take turns, a utility wall, a study that sometimes gets a heater.

Cheap insurance The price gap between a 6A and a 16A socket is small next to the appliance it feeds. Real cost The expensive part of adding a 16A point is usually the circuit and the electrician’s time, not the socket.

The circuit matters more than the socket
A 16A socket on its own does not make a point safe for a geyser. Socket ≠ circuit The wire running back to the distribution board, and the protective device on that circuit, have to be suitable for the load too. Swapping a 6A socket for a 16A one on the same light-duty wiring only moves the weak point from the face of the wall to inside it.
Electrician’s job Sizing the cable and choosing the circuit breaker are decisions for a licensed electrician, who can see how your home is wired and what else shares the circuit. Dedicated circuits Heavy appliances such as the AC and geyser are commonly given a circuit of their own.

Planning sockets room by room

Kitchen At least one 16A or combined point for the microwave, others for the mixer, kettle and fridge as the appliances demand. Bathroom A 16A point for the geyser, usually switched with an indicator. Bedroom 6A points beside the bed and desk, and a 16A point for the AC. Living room 6A points on the TV wall, shuttered if they are low. Utility A 16A point for the washing machine and one for the iron.
Add one more socket than you think each room needs. A spare 6A outlet costs little at build time and removes the reason for a multi-plug.
Common mistakes we see
6A everywhere Fitting light-duty sockets throughout to save money, then running the iron through an adaptor. Adaptor chains Plugging a multi-plug into a converter into a socket — every load adds up on one set of contacts.
Filed pins Filing or bending plug pins to force a fit. Loose grip Keeping a socket that no longer holds the plug firmly; poor grip means a small contact area, and that is where heat builds. Unmarked products Buying sockets with no manufacturer’s name or no licence number to check.
The fix A correctly rated point for every heavy appliance, installed on a suitable circuit, with shutters where children can reach.
A socket that is warm, marked or loose is telling you something. Stop using it for heavy loads and have it checked.
