16 Amp or 20 Amp Switch? How to Pick the Right Rating
16A vs 20A switch is a question about headroom: both switch a heavy point on and off, but a 16A switch is rated up to 16 amps and a 20A switch up to 20 amps. Below we work out how many amps a geyser, iron or AC draws, which switch suits each, whether a 16A socket needs a 20A switch, what 20AX means, and what each size costs in the VIYONA, VIZA and KEMPS switches we make in Mumbai.
Key takeaways
- 16A switch — for loads up to 16 amps, such as a 16A socket or a 2 kW geyser.
- 20A switch — more margin for the same points, or a load up to 20 amps. Costs little more
- 16A socket — needs a 16A or 20A switch; a 10AX switch is under-rated. Never 10AX
- AC and fixed geyser — common practice is a 32A DP switch that breaks both wires.
- Our MRPs — VIYONA 151 16A ₹74, VIZA V121 20A ₹89, KEMPS K106 20AX ₹107.
16A vs 20A switch: the short answer
A 16A switch and a 20A switch do the same job; the 20A one simply carries more current. A 16A switch suits a load up to 16 amps, such as a 16A socket or a 2 kW geyser. A 20A switch gives more headroom for the same points and for heavier single loads up to 20 amps.
In practice, the choice is rarely close. Most homes need a 6A or 10AX switch for lights and fans, a 16A or 20A switch for a few heavy points, and a 32A DP switch where an AC or geyser should have both wires broken. The 16A vs 20A question sits in the middle band.
We make both sizes. Our VIYONA 151 is a 16A 1 way switch carrying the ISI mark, and our KEMPS and VIZA modular ranges carry 20AX and 20A switches in 1 module and 2 module sizes. This guide works through the current your appliance actually draws, which switch suits a geyser or AC, whether a 16A socket needs a 20A switch, and what each costs at MRP.
What is the difference between a 16A and a 20A switch?
The difference between a 16A and a 20A switch is the current each is rated to carry and switch safely: a 16A switch is rated up to 16 amps and a 20A switch up to 20 amps, so the 20A switch has heavier contacts and terminals and leaves more margin on the same load.
Neither rating changes what the switch does. Both are on/off switches, and both break only one wire unless they are double pole. What you buy with the higher number is headroom: a switch working well below its rating runs cooler and its contacts wear more slowly.
Two things the higher number does not do:
It does not protect the wire It does not replace an MCB
A switch always has to be rated at or above the socket or appliance it controls, and the wire and MCB on the circuit must suit the load too. Ratings from 6A to 32A are set out in our switch and socket ratings chart.
The switch is one link in the circuit. Upsizing the switch alone never makes a heavier load safe on thin wire.

How much current does your appliance draw?
An appliance’s current in amps is roughly its wattage divided by the supply voltage, so at 230 volts a 1,000 W iron draws about 4.3 amps, a 2,000 W geyser about 8.7 amps and a 3,000 W geyser about 13 amps, which tells you whether a 16A or a 20A switch has enough margin.
Running current at 230V, by appliance wattage
Arithmetic (watts ÷ 230 V), not a measurement. Motors and compressors draw more for a moment at start.
Read the watts on the appliance’s rating plate and divide. Up to about 3,000 W, a 16A switch has margin. Between 3,000 and 3,700 W a 16A switch is close to its limit, and a 20A switch is the comfortable choice. Our VIYONA dry irons, for example, are 1,000 W, a light load for either size. Our appliance power consumption chart lists typical wattages.
Divide the appliance wattage by 230 to get its running amps.
A 20A switch can always replace a 16A one on the same point.
A 16A socket needs a 16A or 20A switch, never a 10AX.
Common practice is a 32A DP switch for both wires.
Which switch for a geyser: 16A or 20A?
For a geyser, a 16A switch is enough for a typical 2 kW home unit and a 20A switch gives more margin, but common practice for a fixed geyser is a 32A DP switch, which breaks phase and neutral together so the heater is fully disconnected while anyone touches the tap or the tank.
A 2,000 W geyser draws about 8.7 A; a 3,000 W one about 13 A. Either is inside a 16A rating. The reason many electricians fit a 32A DP switch instead is not the current but the extra safety of breaking both wires in a wet room, and the indicator that shows the heater is on.
Where a geyser plugs into a socket rather than being hard-wired, the socket must be a 16A socket and the switch at least 16A. Placement, ratings and indicators are covered in our geyser switch guide.
Switch off the MCB and test dead before changing any geyser switch. A licensed electrician should handle anything beyond a like-for-like swap.
Which switch for an AC: 16A, 20A or 32A?
For a split or window AC, common practice is neither a 16A nor a 20A single pole switch but a 32A DP switch or a dedicated MCB at the board, because an AC compressor draws a starting surge several times its running current and the outdoor unit is best fully disconnected for service.
A 1.5 ton AC typically runs at about 7 to 9 amps, so on paper a 16A switch carries it. The start-up surge is what makes the heavier choice sensible. That is why the usual AC point is a 32A DP switch and a 16A socket, or a hard-wired connection fed from its own MCB.
Our KEMPS K116 32AX DP switch with indicator is ₹360 MRP, and the VIZA V1250 32A DP switch with indicator ₹330. The breaker for the circuit is covered in our MCB for 1, 1.5 and 2 ton AC guide, and the DP switch itself in our DP switch guide.
Never run an AC from a 6A socket or a multi-plug. Its own 16A point, switch and MCB is the minimum.
What is a 20 amp switch used for?
A 20 amp switch is used for heavier single points in a home, such as a 16A power socket, a geyser, a water pump, an iron or heater point, or a long lighting circuit, wherever a 10AX switch would be at or near its limit and a 32A DP switch would be more than the point needs.
Typical uses:
16A socket Geyser Water pump Room heater Kitchen appliance point Outdoor lighting run
In our range, the VIZA V121 20A 1 way piano switch is ₹89 MRP, with the V123 with indicator at ₹109. In KEMPS, the K106 20AX 1 way switch is ₹107 and the K108 with indicator ₹120. For a pump, see our motor starter for water pump guide; a larger pump is often better on a starter than on a plain switch.
An indicator on a 20A switch earns its place on a geyser or pump, where you cannot see whether the load is running.
What is a 20AX switch?
A 20AX switch is a 20 amp switch that is also rated to switch lamp loads, such as LED drivers and tube lights, at the full 20 amps, so it carries the same current as a 20A switch and suits both heavy appliance points and large lighting circuits.
The X is a load type, not extra current. Our AX rating guide explains the marking in full. What matters here is that a 20AX switch meets any requirement written as 16A, 16AX or 20A, because it is rated at or above all three.
We print 20AX on every KEMPS series. In Peony: K106 1 way ₹107 K107 2 way ₹132 K108 indicator ₹120. VIZA modular switches are printed as 20A in our catalogue, and the VIZA Air range as 20AX.
If you are buying for a 16A point and the counter has only 20AX switches, the 20AX is the right substitute; the reverse, a 10AX for a 16A point, is not.
Read the rating on the module, not on the plate. The plate carries no rating at all.
Does a 16A socket need a 16A or a 20A switch?
A 16A socket needs a switch rated at least 16 amps, so either a 16A or a 20A switch is correct, while a 6A or 10AX switch is not, because the socket invites a load of up to 16 amps that a lighter switch is not rated to carry or break.
This is the most common rating mistake we see on boards: a 10AX switch on a 16A socket. It works on day one with a small load, then heats up the first time a heater or geyser runs for an hour.
Our 16A sockets pair as follows:
VIYONA 153 universal, ₹90 VIZA V263 16A, ₹160 KEMPS K193 universal, ₹205
With any of them, a 16A or 20A switch is right. If you are fitting a modular board, a KEMPS 20AX or VIZA 20A switch matches the plate. Universal sockets, which take 6A and 16A plugs, are explained in our universal socket guide.
A warm switch beside a 16A socket is a sign the switch is under-rated. Switch off and have it checked.
16A vs 20A switch price: how much more is 20A?
A 20A switch costs only a little more than a 16A switch in our range: the VIYONA 151 16A 1 way switch is ₹74 MRP, the VIZA V121 20A 1 way piano switch ₹89 and the KEMPS K106 20AX 1 way ₹107, so price is rarely a reason to choose the lower rating.
MRP of our 16A, 20A and heavier switches
MRPs from our current catalogue, bars to scale with ₹360 as the full bar. VIYONA 151 is a conventional switch; the others are modular.
The real cost step is from a single pole 20A switch to a 32A DP switch, which is three to four times the price. VIZA also lists a 25A 1 way switch with indicator, the V124, at ₹155. Full codes are on our VIZA switches and sockets page.
Is a 20A switch 1 module or 2 module?
A 20A switch can be either 1 module or 2 module in our range: the KEMPS K106 20AX and VIZA V121 20A switches are 1 module, while the KEMPS K111 20AX and VIZA V221 20A switches are wider 2 module versions with a bigger rocker, and both sizes carry the same 20 amp rating.
Choose by the board and the look, not by the current. A 1M 20A switch keeps a board compact. A 2M 20A switch is easier to find and press, which helps on a geyser or pump point. MRPs: K111 2M ₹156 against K106 1M ₹107; VIZA V221 2M ₹130 against V121 1M ₹89.
Remember the module count when ordering a plate. A 2M switch takes the space of two 1M switches. Our 1 module and 2 module switches guide lists every size, and the plate size calculator adds it up.
Mixing 1M and 2M switches on one plate is normal. Count the modules before buying the plate.
Can you swap a 16A switch for a 20A one?
You can replace a 16A switch with a 20A switch on the same point, because a higher switch rating is always acceptable as long as the switch fits the board, while replacing a 16A or 20A switch with a lower rating is not, since the point may carry a load the smaller switch cannot handle.
Going up is safe; going down is a risk. What a bigger switch cannot fix is a circuit that is overloaded: if a 16A switch got hot on a geyser, check the wire size, the terminals and the MCB before blaming the switch. Our hot switch and sparking socket guide walks through it.
For the swap itself:
Switch off the MCB Test dead with a tester Match 1M or 2M Tighten both terminals
Our guide to replacing a switch covers the steps safely.
If the old switch shows scorch marks or melted plastic, stop. Call a licensed electrician to check the wiring behind it.
