What Is a Universal Socket, and When Should You Fit One?
Key takeaways
- Universal socket — accepts both 6A and 16A plugs. Its printed rating, and the circuit behind it, decide what it can power.
- 6 and 16A — rated 16A, so it can serve heavy appliances only on a 16A circuit.
- 3 in 1, 5 in 1 — combined units with a switch and a universal socket; the number is a trade name, so read the rating.
- Heavy fixed appliances — a dedicated 16A socket or hard wiring through a DP switch is usually better.
- Our MRPs — VIYONA 153 with shutter ₹90, VIZA V270 ₹130, KEMPS K193 with shutter ₹205.
Universal socket: the short answer
A universal socket is a socket built to take more than one plug size in the same face, most often both the small 6A plug and the large 16A plug, so one point can serve a phone charger in the morning and a microwave in the evening. In India you will see it sold as a 6 and 16 amp universal socket, or built into combined units called 3 in 1, 5 in 1 or switch-socket combined.
Taking a plug and carrying its load are two different things, though. What a universal socket can safely power is set by the rating printed on it and by the circuit behind it, not by which pins fit.
We make universal sockets and combined switch-socket units in KEMPS, VIZA and VIYONA at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai, from ₹90 MRP. This guide explains what a universal socket is, what 3 in 1 and 5 in 1 mean, when to choose a plain 16A socket instead, and what ours cost.
What is a universal socket?
A universal socket is a power socket whose openings are shaped to accept plugs of more than one size or pattern, typically the 6A and 16A round-pin plugs used in India, so that a single socket can take either plug without an adaptor, though its rating still decides how much current it may carry.
Look at the face and you will see small and large pin holes sharing one outlet, or one set of holes shaped to take both. Most also carry an earth contact for three pin plugs.
Our VIYONA range lists two: the 153 6 and 16A universal socket with shutter at ₹90 and the 154 on a porcelain base at ₹93. KEMPS has the K193 6AX and 16AX universal socket with shutter at ₹205, and VIZA the V270 6 and 16A universal socket (2M) at ₹130. All are on our VIYONA switches and sockets and series pages.
A plug that fits is not a load that is allowed. Read the rating printed on the socket before you plug in a heater, geyser or AC.

What is a 6 and 16 amp universal socket?
A 6 and 16 amp universal socket is a socket that accepts both the 6A three pin plug and the 16A three pin plug, and is rated to carry up to 16 amps, so it can serve light appliances and heavy ones from the same point, provided the circuit behind it is wired and protected for 16A.
The 6A plug is the smaller one on chargers, lamps, TVs and laptops. The 16A plug, with thicker pins, goes on geysers, ACs, irons, microwaves and room heaters. Which appliance needs which is covered in full in our 6A vs 16A socket guide, so we do not repeat it here.
The 16A in the name only holds if the wire and MCB behind the socket are sized for 16A. On a 6A lighting circuit, a universal socket is still a 6A point, whatever plugs it accepts. Ask your electrician which circuit feeds it.
Takes 6A and 16A plugs in one face.
What fits is not what it can carry; read the label.
Best on kitchen counters and utility walls.
Covers the larger openings from small fingers.
Universal socket vs 16A socket: which is better for heavy appliances?
For a fixed heavy appliance such as a geyser, AC or oven, a dedicated 16A socket is usually the better choice because it takes only the 16A plug and grips it firmly, while a universal socket is better where light and heavy appliances take turns at the same point, such as a kitchen counter or utility wall.
A dedicated 16A socket, such as our VIZA V263 on a porcelain base at ₹160, says clearly what the point is for. A universal socket trades a little of that clarity for flexibility. Some people also find a universal socket grips a plug less firmly than a socket made for one plug size, so check the plug sits snug.
For the heaviest points, such as an AC or a geyser, many electricians prefer hard wiring through a 32A DP switch instead of any plug. For the geyser specifically, see our geyser switch guide.
A plug that wobbles in any socket will heat under a heavy load. If a plug is loose, stop using that socket for heavy appliances and have it replaced.
What is a 3 in 1 switch socket?
A 3 in 1 switch socket is a single combined unit that puts a switch and a universal socket on one body, so one fitting replaces a separate switch and socket, and in our VIYONA range it comes as the 159 at ₹150 and, with its own junction box for surface fitting, the 160 at ₹175.
The in 1 number is a trade name, not a standard; makers use it loosely for how many plug types or functions a unit combines. Read the face and the printed rating rather than the number.
Combined units are popular because the switch sits right beside the socket, which makes switching an appliance off at the wall a habit. The trade-off is that if either the switch or the socket fails you replace both. Our switch vs socket guide covers combined units against separate switches and sockets in detail.
The cheapest of our combined units is the VIYONA 156 6A switch socket combined at ₹83, for 6A plugs only.
What is a 5 in 1 switch socket combined?
A 5 in 1 switch socket combined is a larger combined unit with a switch and a universal socket on one body, sold under a bigger in-1 number than a 3 in 1, and in our VIYONA range the 161 is ₹250, the 162 with its own junction box ₹300, and the 165 7 in 1 with junction box ₹310.
Go bigger and you reach the double switch socket combined units: the VIYONA 171 6A double (10 in 1) at ₹270 and the 172 16A double (8 in 1) at ₹390, two switch-socket pairs on one body.
As with any combined unit, the rating matters more than the count. The 171 is a 6A unit; the 172 is the 16A one for heavier appliances. The full list is on our VIYONA 5 in 1 and double switch socket combined pages.

Match the range to your board: VIYONA for conventional boards, KEMPS and VIZA for modular plates. See the KEMPS K193 for the modular version with shutter.
Universal socket with shutter: is it safer?
A universal socket with a shutter is safer around children, because its spring-loaded shutter keeps the live openings covered until a proper plug pushes it aside, which matters more on a universal socket since its larger openings would otherwise be easier for a small finger or object to enter.
Several of ours have it: the VIYONA 153 at ₹90 and the KEMPS K193 at ₹205 are both listed with a shutter. The VIYONA 154 on a porcelain base is the version without one.
A shutter is a second line of defence, not a replacement for an RCCB or for supervision. Our socket with shutter guide explains how shutters work and where they matter most.
Does a universal socket take foreign plugs?
Some universal sockets are shaped to take flat-pin or other foreign plug patterns as well as Indian round pins, but many sold in India are universal only in the sense of taking both 6A and 16A Indian plugs, so check the face of the specific socket before relying on it for an imported appliance.
Our 6 and 16A universal sockets are described by their 6A and 16A plug sizes. We do not claim foreign-plug compatibility for them, so treat that as not assumed.
For an imported appliance, the safer route is a proper plug top of the right rating fitted by an electrician, or a correctly rated conversion plug such as our VIYONA 254 6 and 16A universal conversion plug at ₹185. Our multi plug vs extension board guide covers adaptors and their limits.
Never force a plug into a socket it does not fit, and never use an adaptor to run a heavy appliance from a 6A point.
Universal socket connection: how is it wired?
A universal socket is wired like any three pin socket, with phase to the terminal marked L, neutral to N and earth to the earth terminal, usually through a switch in the phase beside it, and it must be fed by a circuit whose wire and MCB match the rating you intend to use, 16A for heavy appliances.
The earth connection is not optional; a 16A appliance with a metal body depends on it. Our switch board wiring diagram shows a socket and its switch on a board.
Replacing a socket like for like is a simple job: MCB off, test dead, note each wire, fit the new socket, tighten every screw firmly, MCB on. Moving a socket to a heavier circuit, or converting a 6A point to 16A, is a job for a licensed electrician.
Where should you use a universal socket at home?
Use a universal socket where different appliances share one point: a kitchen counter where a mixer, kettle and microwave take turns, a utility wall for an iron and a washing machine, a study that sometimes gets a heater, or a shop counter, and keep dedicated 16A sockets or hard wiring for fixed heavy appliances.
Kitchen counter: the classic place. Our kitchen electrical points guide sets out which counter appliances need 16A. Utility: iron and washing machine. Bedroom and living room: usually 6A sockets plus USB charging are enough.
Keep it one plug per socket. A universal socket is not a reason to add a multi plug for a heater and a kettle at once.
Plan sockets room by room at the wiring stage. A universal socket on the kitchen counter costs little more than a 6A one and saves an adaptor later.
