The phrase “switch board” hides three separate components, and almost every buying mistake comes from treating them as one thing.
The modules are the working parts — the individual switches, sockets, regulators and indicators. The grid plate is the metal frame screwed to the wall box that the modules clip into. The front plate (or cover plate) is the decorative face you actually see and touch.
You can replace any one of these without replacing the others. That is the whole point of modular wiring, and it is the reason a modular board outlives a traditional one: a failed switch is a five-minute module swap, not a re-wiring job.
Modules: how switch boards are measured
Switch boards are sized in modules, written as M. One module is the width of one standard switch. A 4M plate holds four single switches, or two switches and one two-module socket, and so on.
Sizes run from 1M up to 18M. The common domestic sizes are:

The one rule worth following: count the modules you need today, then add one. A spare module costs very little now and saves cutting the wall open when you add a router, a water purifier or a second charging point.

Every switch carries a current rating, and using the wrong one is the most common — and most dangerous — switch board mistake in Indian homes.
6A — lights, fans and small electronics.
16A — anything that draws heavy current: geysers, air conditioners, microwave ovens, irons and room heaters.
Running a geyser through a 6A switch does not always fail immediately. It heats, discolours, and fails later — often inside the wall.
Which rating each appliance needs
Bar length indicates relative current draw, not exact amperage. Always match the switch to the appliance rating plate.
Work out the switches you need, then add one spare before choosing a plate.

How to judge build quality in thirty seconds
You cannot open a switch in a showroom, but you can learn a great deal by handling one.
Press the rocker. A good switch has a short, definite travel and a clean click. A vague or mushy action means a weak spring mechanism, and that is what fails first.
Look at the plate edge. Moulding lines, uneven gloss or a slightly wavy edge indicate loose tolerances. If the visible surface is imprecise, the parts you cannot see rarely are.
Check the terminal screws. Brass terminals with generously sized screws hold a cable properly for years. Thin, soft screws strip when an electrician tightens them — and a loose terminal is how connections heat up.
Ask what the contact is made of. Silver-alloy contacts resist the small arc that occurs every time you switch off. This is the single component that most determines how many operations a switch survives.
The thirty-second showroom check
Bar length shows how easily you can judge each one in a showroom — the last two usually need asking about.
Finishes, and what they cost you in practice
Plate finish is where most of the price difference sits, and it is a genuine decision rather than pure decoration.
Gloss white remains the default for good reason: it hides nothing but is cheap to replace and matches everything. Matte and textured finishes hide fingerprints far better, which matters at a kitchen or main-door board. Metallic and wood-effect plates suit living rooms but show scratches at high-traffic switches.
One practical note: a high-gloss plate beside a window will show dust within a day. Put your best-looking plates where they are seen, and durable ones where they are used.

The part nobody checks: the back box
A good switch board bolted into a poor back box is a poor installation, and this is genuinely the most overlooked item in the whole job.
The box needs enough depth to take the modules plus folded cable without crushing it. A shallow box forces wires against the back of a module, which stresses terminals and makes future changes difficult.
It also needs to be rust-resistant and square. A box set even slightly out of true leaves a plate that never sits flush against the wall, and no amount of tightening fixes it — it only cracks the plate.
If you are replacing old switch boards, budget for new back boxes too. Reusing a rusted or shallow box is the most common reason a new board looks wrong after installation.
Certification: what to actually look for
“ISI marked” printed on packaging means nothing by itself. What matters is a licence number you can check.
IS 3854 switches IS/IEC 60898-1 MCBs IS 16102 LED
For switches, the relevant Indian standard is IS 3854. A genuine product carries the ISI mark alongside a CM/L licence number belonging to the manufacturer. For MCBs the standard is IS/IEC 60898-1, and for LED fittings, IS 16102.

Living room 8M–12M 6A
Plan generously. Lights, fans, television, set-top box and at least two spare sockets. One larger board near the seating is more useful than three scattered 2M boards.
Bedroom 4M–6M 6A
Two-way switching for the main light, so it works from the door and the bedside, is the single upgrade people appreciate most.
Kitchen 6M–8M 16A
Sixteen amp throughout, and more sockets than seems reasonable. Kitchens accumulate appliances faster than any other room.
Bathroom 2M–4M 16A
The geyser switch must be 16A, ideally with an indicator so you can see at a glance that it is off.
Entrance 2M–3M 6A
A bell push and a master light switch, positioned where you reach without looking.
Plan the whole house at once. Adding a board later means opening a wall and re-plastering. Deciding room by room on paper costs nothing.
