They are set out in alphabetical order, with owner, head office, founding year and listing, each from a source you can check. Counting only national brands whose own Indian websites list all four of switches, house wires, MCBs and LED lighting, and whose company or parent is publicly listed, the top 5 electrical brands in India are Anchor by Panasonic, Finolex, Havells, Orient Electric and Polycab, given here in alphabetical order, not ranked.
That is a list with a stated rule, so you can check it on each brand’s website in ten minutes. It is not a quality ranking or a sales league table.
Who is writing this matters, so here it is up front. We are Vinayak Electricals, a family manufacturer that has made switches in Mumbai since 1995. We are not one of the five and we do not claim to be. Further down we say where a smaller maker fits, and where the big names are stronger.

How we picked the five, and why it is not a ranking
Most “top brands” lists never say how they chose. Ours uses two tests, both of which you can repeat.
Test 1: all four categories The brand’s own Indian website lists switches, house wire, MCBs and LED lighting. These are the four things a home buyer picks for a new flat or a rewire.
Test 2: public accounts The company, or its parent, is listed on a stock exchange. That means annual reports, audited numbers and a public record of who owns it, so size is something you can read rather than take on trust.

Alphabetical Anchor, Finolex, Havells, Orient, Polycab. The order carries no meaning. Nobody should read position one as “best”.

All five brands on this list sell every one of the four categories on their Indian websites, and so does GM Modular, while better-known names just outside the list, such as Legrand, Crompton, Schneider Electric and Syska, do not list at least one of switches, house wire, MCBs or LED lighting.

Anchor by Panasonic and Finolex
Anchor by Panasonic. Founded 1963 HQ Mumbai Anchor started as an Indian family-owned electrical company. Panasonic acquired it in 2007, and it now operates as Panasonic Life Solutions India Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese group. The Indian company is not listed itself; its parent, Panasonic, is listed in Tokyo.
On its Indian website it sells switches and sockets under Anchor ranges such as Roma, building wires, MCBs, RCCBs, isolators and distribution boards, and LED bulbs, battens, panels and downlights. 4 of 4
Finolex. Founded 1958 HQ Pune NSE: FINCABLES Finolex Cables was founded by the brothers P. P. and K. P. Chhabria and is part of the Finolex Group. Cable is where it began, and its website lists house wire alongside power, communication and optical fibre cable.
It also lists switches, including its Feriha and Grazo ranges and a smart-switch line, MCBs, RCCBs, isolators and distribution boards, and indoor and outdoor lights. 4 of 4
Panasonic Life Solutions India lists its switchgear alongside the Anchor switch ranges. At the counter, check the name and licence number on the MCB itself, not the brand on the board beside it.
Havells, Orient Electric and Polycab
Havells. Founded 1958 HQ Noida NSE: HAVELLS Havells India’s corporate office is in Noida. Its website sells switches and smart switches, flexible cables (house wire), circuit breakers and distribution boards, and a long LED lighting list. 4 of 4
Orient Electric. CK Birla Group HQ New Delhi NSE: ORIENTELEC Orient dates from 1954 as a division of Orient Paper & Industries and was demerged as a listed company in 2018. Besides fans, its website lists modular switches, FR and FR-LSH house wires, MCBs, RCCBs and distribution boards, and LED lighting. 4 of 4
Polycab. Founded 1964 HQ Mumbai Listed 2019 Polycab began as Sind Electric Stores, set up by Thakurdas Jaisinghani, and listed on the NSE and BSE in April 2019. Its website sells house wire, Levana and Etira switches, MCBs, RCCBs, isolators and distribution boards, and LED lighting. 4 of 4
Years since founding, the five and us
Founding years as given by Wikipedia or the company; bar length is years to 2026, scaled to the oldest. Orient’s year is its start as a division of Orient Paper; Polycab’s is its start as Sind Electric Stores. Age is history, not a quality score.
Brands just outside the five
Leaving a brand out of this list is not a verdict on its products. It means it failed one of the two tests on the day we checked.
GM Modular Fails test 2 Its website sells all four categories. It is GM Modular Pvt. Ltd., a private company registered in Maharashtra, so there are no public accounts to read.
Legrand No house wire listed The French group, based in Limoges, sells switch ranges such as Myrius and Arteor and a full MCB and distribution board line in India. Its Indian site lists lighting controls, not LED lamps.
Schneider Electric No house wire listed Also French, headquartered in Rueil-Malmaison. Switches and Acti9 MCBs are on its Indian site; house wire is not.
Crompton No switches or MCBs listed Headquartered in Mumbai, it lists house wires and a wide lighting range alongside fans and appliances.
Syska No MCBs listed Known for LED lighting; its site lists no MCBs or switchgear.

Which is the largest electrical company in India?
There is no single largest electrical company in India until you say by what measure, because revenue, profit, market value and product range each give a different answer, and the listed companies publish audited figures in their annual reports that you can compare yourself for the same financial year.
We are not printing a number here. Figures go stale every quarter, and a revenue table on a manufacturer’s blog gets quoted wrongly for years.
Revenue total sales, which for some of these companies is mostly cable, not switches. Market value what the share market thinks the company is worth, which moves daily. Range how many categories it sells. Reach how many dealers and cities stock it.
Where the size comes from A company can be large because of cable or fans, which tells you little about the 6A switch you are choosing.
For a switch board, the size of the company behind the brand matters less than the licence number printed on the switch in your hand.

What does a brand’s size tell you, and what doesn’t it?
A big brand’s size tells you it has national distribution, public accounts and a service network, but it does not tell you whether the particular switch, MCB, wire or lamp in your hand is certified, because certification is a BIS licence granted to one factory for one product to one Indian Standard.
Size does tell you that spares are likely to be stocked nearby, that the company will probably still exist in ten years, and that its accounts are public.
Size does not tell you which factory made this item, whether this item is covered by a licence, or whether the box on the shelf is genuine. Popular brands are also the ones most worth copying.
The standard to look for depends on the product:
IS 3854 switches for domestic use. IS/IEC 60898-1 MCBs. IS 694 PVC-insulated house wire up to 1100 V. IS 16102 self-ballasted LED lamps.
CM/L number on the product is the proof. ISI logo with no number is not. “ISI type” wording makes no claim at all.
The licence belongs to the product, not the brand. A big name and a small maker are judged by exactly the same check.
How do you check any brand’s BIS licence?
Find the CM/L number printed beside the ISI mark on the product itself, then enter it under Verify Licence Details in the free BIS Care app or on manakonline.in, and confirm the licence is live and names that manufacturer, that product and that Indian Standard.
1 Read the number off the product, not only the carton, which is easier to copy.
2 Enter it in the BIS Care app or on the BIS portal.
3 Check the status is live, and the manufacturer name and address match the box.
4 Check the standard and the product variety match what you are buying. A switch licence does not cover an MCB.
LED lamps and drivers usually carry an R-number under BIS registration rather than a CM/L number. The same app checks those.
If a seller cannot show you a licence number, stop there. Every other comparison assumes the product is genuinely certified.

Big national brand or a manufacturer’s own range?
A big national brand is the easier choice when you want one name across every category and a showroom in most cities, while a manufacturer’s own range sold through dealers suits a buyer who wants published MRPs, a maker who picks up the phone and test reports before ordering, provided the licences check out.
National brand one catalogue for the whole house, wide service reach, familiar to every electrician.
Manufacturer range you deal closer to the people who make it, and a smaller company usually answers a technical question the same day.
Either way check the dealer stocks the range in depth, so a spare is a walk away and not an order.
Most homes end up with a mix, and that is fine: wire from a cable specialist, switches from one maker, MCBs from another. What matters is that each item carries its own verified licence.
