Extension board or spike guard: what is the difference?
An extension board carries power from one wall socket to a few outlets on a cord, while a spike guard is an extension board that also contains a surge component, usually a metal-oxide varistor, meant to absorb brief voltage spikes before they reach plugged-in electronics; in Indian shops the two names are used almost interchangeably.

Does an extension board need a BIS mark?
The plug and sockets on an extension board are covered by compulsory BIS certification under the Plugs and Socket-Outlets (Quality Control) Order, 2019, which requires IS 1293 for plugs and socket-outlets up to 250 V and 16 A, so the plug on the cord and the sockets in the box should each carry the ISI mark.

A board sold loose, with no brand, no ISI mark on the plug and no maker’s address, is one you cannot trace if it overheats.
6A or 16A: what can an extension board safely run?
A 6A extension board can carry about 1,380 watts in total at India’s 230 V supply, which is plenty for a TV, router, computer and chargers together but not for a room heater or an iron, while a 16A socket circuit can carry about 3,680 watts and is the place for heavy appliances.

Every Havells board on its extensions page is rated 6A, 240 V. Portronics rates its Power Plate 4 at 6A and 1,500 W. So the everyday board is a 6A device, whatever its size.

The total is shared by every socket on the board. Six sockets on a 6A board still means 6A in all, not 6A each.
Which appliances should never go on a 6A extension board?
Never run a room heater, iron, hair dryer, kettle, geyser, induction cooktop, microwave or air conditioner from a 6A extension board, because a single one of them can draw close to or more than the board’s whole rating for long periods, and the cord, plug and contacts then heat up.

Typical ranges from a Penn State energy course table, bars to scale with the top of each range and 1,875 W as the full bar. Indian models can run higher; the appliance’s rating plate decides.
Electronics, chargers, lamps sit far below the limit. Heating appliances sit at or above it on their own. Two mid loads together, say a microwave and a kettle, pass it easily.
Overloading a 6A board is how most of them fail. A heater on a spike guard can scorch the plug and the wall socket behind it.

Why does the wire size of the cord matter?
The copper size of an extension board’s cord decides how much current it can carry without overheating, and by a common flexible-cord table a 0.75 sq mm conductor is good for 6 A while 0.5 sq mm is good for only 3 A, so a thin cord can be the weakest part of a board rated higher.

Havells lists some 6A boards with 0.75 sq mm cord and another with 0.5 sq mm. Read that line before you buy, on any brand.

A board’s rating is only as good as its cord. If the box does not state the conductor size, ask the dealer or the brand.
What do joules and clamping voltage mean on a spike guard?
A joule rating tells you how much surge energy a spike guard’s protective part can absorb before it is used up, and the clamping voltage tells you the level at which that part starts diverting a spike, so a higher joule figure and a lower clamping voltage both point to better protection.

Wears out A varistor loses a little with every spike it absorbs, with no outside sign. No figure printed means you cannot compare.
Low voltage, long over-voltage and power cuts are not surge jobs. Those need a stabiliser or a UPS.
No spike guard protects against a direct lightning strike. In a thunderstorm, unplug the TV and computer at the wall.
Which safety features should an extension board have?
A good extension board has a master switch with an indicator, overload protection such as a fuse, thermal cut-out or resettable breaker, shuttered sockets that stop a child pushing something in, and a firm grip on the plug, and each of these is visible on the box or the product page before you buy.

Switch the board off at night and when you leave for a trip. It costs nothing and takes the whole strip out of the circuit.
Is a USB extension board worth it?
A USB extension board is worth it at a desk or bedside where phones and earphones charge every day, because the built-in ports free sockets that separate charger adaptors would otherwise take, but check the stated USB output in amps first, since a low-output port charges slowly.

A phone that needs a particular fast-charging speed should still use its own charger in a normal socket.
How long should an extension board cord be?
Choose the shortest cord that reaches the wall socket without being stretched, bent hard at the plug or run across a walkway, because every extra metre adds resistance and a trip hazard; 1.5 metres suits most TV units and desks, and 3 to 5 metres suits a bed or a room with one far socket.

Coiled while in use A tightly coiled cord traps its own heat. Under rugs Crushed and unable to cool. Door gaps Cut through over time. Uncoiled and visible is the safe way to run it.

What is the extension board price in India?
Extension board prices in India rise with the number of sockets, the cord length, USB ports, a real surge part and individual switches, so compare boards with the same specification rather than the same look, and check that the MRP is printed on the pack, because the MRP is the most a shop may charge.
