Switch Board Height from Floor: How High, Room by Room
The switch board height from floor that Indian electricians most commonly use is about 4 feet (1,220 mm) for the board by the door, measured from the finished floor. Bedside boards sit at 2 to 2.5 feet, low TV sockets at about 1 foot, the geyser point at about 6 feet and the AC point at about 7 feet. These are common practice, not a code. Below: every room and appliance, in mm and in feet and inches, with the socket or switch each point takes and the MRPs of the parts we make.
Key takeaways
- Door board: about 4 ft (1,220 mm) from the finished floor, on the latch side, never behind the door.
- Bedside: 2 to 2.5 ft (610–760 mm), just above the mattress, with a 2 way switch for the main light.
- Low and appliance points — TV about 1 ft, study desk 900–1,000 mm, kitchen counter 1,050–1,200 mm, washing machine 1,000–1,200 mm.
- High points — geyser about 6 ft (1,830 mm), AC about 7 ft (2,135 mm), each near its appliance on a 16A or higher point.
- ⚠ Common practice, not a rule. Decide heights from the furniture drawing and agree them with a licensed electrician before boxes go in.
Switch board height from floor: the short answer
In Indian homes, the switch board height from floor commonly used is about 4 feet (1,220 mm) for the board by the door, measured from the finished floor. Bedside boards sit lower, low TV sockets about 1 foot up, and geyser and AC points high.
None of these is a law. They are common practice, and the same figures we give in our house electrical layout plan and our switch board design ideas. Your furniture can move any of them.
Below we go point by point, from the bedroom door to the AC, in millimetres and in feet and inches, with the rating each point usually takes and the MRPs of the parts we make at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai.
What is the standard switch board height from floor?
There is no single mandatory switch board height for Indian homes; common practice is about 4 feet (1,220 mm) from the finished floor for boards by the door, 2 to 2.5 feet for bedside boards, about 1 foot for low sockets, about 6 feet for the geyser point and about 7 feet for the AC point.
Read every figure here as common practice, not as the standard or a rule. The door board at 1,220 mm (4 ft) sits where a standing hand falls. The bedside board at 610–760 mm (2 ft to 2 ft 6 in) is reachable lying down; low sockets at 305 mm (1 ft) hide behind a TV unit.
Common switch board and point heights in Indian homes (finished floor to box centre)
Common practice in Indian homes, the same heights as our house electrical layout guide. Bar length is proportional to height, with 2,135 mm (7 ft) as the full bar. Not a code requirement and not a catalogue figure.
Agree every height with your electrician before the concealed boxes go in. Once a box is plastered into the wall, only the plate can change.
| Point | Height in mm | Feet and inches | Typical rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door switch board | about 1,220 | about 4 ft | Switches, 6A socket |
| Bedside board | 610 to 760 | 2 ft to 2 ft 6 in | 2 way switch, 6A socket |
| Low socket, TV unit | about 305 | about 1 ft | 6A, shuttered |
| Study desk sockets | 900 to 1,000 | 2 ft 11 in to 3 ft 3 in | 6A, USB |
| Kitchen counter sockets | 1,050 to 1,200 | 3 ft 5 in to 3 ft 11 in | 16A or combined |
| Fridge socket | about 1,220, beside it | about 4 ft | 16A, commonly |
| Washing machine socket | 1,000 to 1,200 | 3 ft 3 in to 3 ft 11 in | 16A, switched |
| Geyser point | about 1,830 | about 6 ft | 16A or higher, DP switch |
| AC point | about 2,135 | about 7 ft | 16A socket, 20A or 32A DP switch |
Switch board height in feet, mm and inches: how to measure it
Measure every height from the finished floor level, after tiles or wood flooring, not from the bare slab. Tiles and screed add height.
Then say which point of the box the number refers to. In this guide every height is to the centre of the box. Some electricians mark the bottom edge instead. On most of our single-row plates, which are 95 mm tall (the VIZA Decore range is 86–87 mm), the two differ by about 48 mm (just under 2 in). Write which one on the drawing.
Multi-row plates are taller (150 mm to 230 mm); our modular plate sizes guide lists them.
Plate height decides how far centre and bottom marks drift apart
Outer plate heights from our catalogue’s plate size drawings. Bar length is proportional to height, with 230 mm as the full bar. Half the plate height is the gap between a centre mark and a bottom mark.
Conversions used here: 1 foot is 304.8 mm and 1 inch is 25.4 mm. 4 ft is 1,219 mm, which we round to 1,220 mm.
About 1,220 mm from the finished floor, on the latch side of the door.
Just above the mattress, with a 2 way switch for the main light.
Keep every board in a room at one height, measured to the box centre.
Geyser about 6 ft and AC about 7 ft, close to the appliance.
What is the switch board height in a bedroom?
In a bedroom, the board by the door is commonly fixed about 4 feet (1,220 mm) from the finished floor, on the latch side, with a second, smaller board beside the bed at 610–760 mm and low sockets for a TV or a study corner at the heights of that furniture.
Put the door board on the latch side, never behind the door, and clear of the wardrobe. A typical door board carries switches for the main light, the fan and a socket, plus a fan regulator and the socket itself, which adds up to 7 modules and fits an 8M plate; the plate size calculator does the sum.
Keep one height per room. Boards on one line look planned; three heights look like three renovations.
Bedroom heights from finished floor (common practice)
Common practice in Indian homes, to the centre of the box. Bar length is proportional to the top of each range, with 2,135 mm (7 ft) as the full bar.
In a child’s room, the board at 1,220 mm can be within reach of a toddler who climbs. Shuttered sockets matter more than height there.
What height should the switch be beside the bed?
A bedside switch board is commonly fixed 610–760 mm (2 ft to 2 ft 6 in) from the finished floor, a little above the top of the mattress, so you can reach it lying down without sitting up, and it usually carries a 2 way switch for the main light plus a socket for a phone or lamp.
Decide the bed height first: a storage bed with a thick mattress can sit well above 600 mm. Set the board just above the bed you will actually buy, beside the headboard.
The 2 way switch lets you switch the main light off from bed and on at the door. KEMPS K102 is a 10AX 2 way switch with an MRP of ₹105 (KEMPS Peony K102); VIZA V1202, a 10 A 2 way switch, is ₹90. See our 1 way vs 2 way switch guide.
For a corded switch that lies on the bed, the VIYONA 186 2 way bed switch is ₹40 MRP (VIYONA bed and surface switches). A USB socket at the bedside such as KEMPS K207 (₹750) removes the adapter.
Fit the bedside board on both sides of a double bed. It costs one small plate and saves a walk round the bed every night.
What is the switch board height for a TV unit?
For a TV unit, sockets are commonly placed either low, about 305 mm (1 ft) from the floor and hidden behind the unit, or about 100–150 mm (4–6 in) above the top of the unit, so the plugs stay out of sight and the cords stay short.
Which one depends on the unit drawing. A closed unit with a back panel needs a cut-out to reach a 305 mm (1 ft) socket; an open unit or a floating shelf usually works better with sockets just above it. For a wall-mounted TV, mark the bracket position first and put the sockets behind the screen, where the TV hides them.
A TV wall typically carries 6A sockets for the TV, set-top box and router, a TV socket and a data point. KEMPS K201 is a TV socket at ₹102 MRP and KEMPS K205 a 2M RJ45 modem jack with shutter at ₹284. Low points are within a child’s reach, so use shuttered sockets: KEMPS K192 is a 6A 3-pin socket with shutter at ₹110 (KEMPS K192).
Do not leave a TV socket where the unit’s back panel will cover it with no cut-out. An unreachable socket becomes an extension lead.
Which TV, data and telephone module to pick, and how each connects, is covered in our guide to data and TV sockets.
What is the switch board height for a study table?
For a study table or work desk, sockets are commonly placed 900–1,000 mm (2 ft 11 in to 3 ft 3 in) from the finished floor, just above a desk top that is typically around 750 mm (2 ft 5.5 in), so chargers and the lamp plug in without anyone crawling under the desk.
Measure the desk before marking: a built-in desk from a carpenter may be higher or lower than 750 mm. Keep the board above the desk top, not behind the drawers.
Count the plugs: laptop, monitor, lamp and phone often need three or four 6A sockets. A space heater in winter needs a 16A point, not an adaptor.
A combined socket takes both plugs: KEMPS K193 is a 6A & 16AX universal socket with shutter at an MRP of ₹205 (KEMPS K193). Our 6A vs 16A socket guide explains why it belongs only on a circuit wired for 16A.
A desk in a child’s room puts sockets at exactly a child’s eye level. Choose shuttered versions there.
What is the kitchen counter and microwave socket height?
Kitchen counter sockets are commonly placed 1,050–1,200 mm (3 ft 5 in to 3 ft 11 in) from the finished floor, just above the backsplash of a counter that is typically 850–900 mm high, and a microwave or OTG on the counter uses that same line, while one in a tall unit follows the carpenter’s drawing.
Set sockets above the backsplash tile line so the tile does not have to be cut round the plate. Keep every counter socket away from the sink and the hob. Your electrician and kitchen designer set the clearance on site.
A microwave, OTG or induction hob is a heating load and goes on a 16A point, typically its own. VIZA V263 is a 16A socket with a porcelain base at an MRP of ₹160 (VIZA V263). For a built-in microwave, the socket goes beside the niche where a cut-out reaches it.
Kitchen and utility heights from finished floor (common practice)
Common practice in Indian homes, to the centre of the box; the counter top is a typical furniture height, shown for reference. Bar length is proportional to the top of each range, with 2,135 mm (7 ft) as the full bar.
What is the fridge socket height from floor?
A fridge socket is commonly placed at the room’s switch board line, about 1,220 mm (4 ft) from the finished floor, beside the fridge rather than behind it, so the plug can be pulled without moving a heavy appliance and the socket stays clear of the back of the fridge.
Put it on the side the door does not swing. A socket behind the fridge looks tidy but cannot be reached when the fridge needs switching off.
Our 6A vs 16A guide notes that the refrigerator is commonly given its own 16A point. VIZA V1266 is a 16A porcelain socket at an MRP of ₹179 (VIZA V1266).
For a fridge in a niche, ask the carpenter to leave the socket in the side panel or above the fridge’s top.
Check the fridge’s manual for the plug type and any ventilation gap before the point is fixed. Large double-door models vary.
What is the washing machine socket height from floor?
A washing machine socket is commonly placed 1,000–1,200 mm (3 ft 3 in to 3 ft 11 in) from the finished floor, above the top of the machine and away from the tap and drain, so water from a leak, an overflow or a wet floor cannot reach the plug.
A low socket on a utility balcony or bathroom floor is exactly where water collects. Fix the socket above the machine, to one side of the tap rather than under it.
A washing machine is a motor and heater load, so it typically takes a 16A point, as our 6A vs 16A socket guide sets out. Put a 20AX switch beside the socket so the machine can be switched off at the board. KEMPS K193, a 6A & 16AX universal socket with shutter, is ₹205 MRP, and a KEMPS K147 20AX switch is ₹120; a VIZA V263 16A socket is ₹160.
Never plug a washing machine through a multi-plug or an extension lead on a wet floor. If the socket is in the wrong place, move the point.
What is the geyser switch height in a bathroom?
The geyser point is commonly fixed about 1,830 mm (6 ft) from the finished floor, high and close to the heater, while the geyser switch itself usually sits outside the bathroom on the board by the door, at the room’s board line of about 1,220 mm (4 ft).
Keeping the switch outside the bathroom keeps wet hands off it and puts it on the same board as the bathroom light and exhaust. The high point at 1,830 mm (6 ft) sits above most splashes; keep it as far from the shower as the geyser position allows. Sockets stay away from the shower.
A geyser is a heating load and goes on a 16A or higher point, commonly on a circuit of its own and switched with an indicator so you can see it is on. Our layout guide notes geyser points usually take a DP switch: VIZA V1250, a 32 A DP switch with indicator, is ₹330 MRP. Where your electrician uses a single-pole switch instead, VIZA V1248, a 20 A 1 way switch with indicator, is ₹160 (VIZA V1248).
Switch off the MCB and confirm the point is dead with a tester before anyone touches a geyser connection. If you are unsure, call a licensed electrician.
What is the AC point height from floor?
An AC point is commonly fixed about 2,135 mm (7 ft) from the finished floor, close to where the indoor unit will hang, so the unit’s short power cord reaches the socket or switch without a joint or an extension, and the point stays out of sight above furniture.
Mark the indoor unit first: its height depends on the ceiling and the pipe route.
The wall point follows the circuit. Our MCB for AC guide gives the common pairing: a 16A MCB with a 16A socket, and a 20A circuit with a 20A switch or a 32A DP switch. KEMPS K147 is a 20AX 1 way switch at an MRP of ₹120 (KEMPS K147), VIZA V1246 a 20A switch at ₹145 and VIZA V1250 a 32A DP switch with indicator at ₹330 (VIZA V1250).
The AC’s installation manual states the breaker and wall point the maker expects. It wins over any typical figure here.
How to mark switch board heights before wiring
Mark heights on a drawing first and on the wall second. Start from the furniture layout: bed, desk, TV unit, wardrobe, kitchen counter and appliance positions.
Then walk every room with the electrician. Snap a level line at the board height you agree, mark each box centre on it, and write the height and the rating (6A, 16A, 20A) beside the mark. Photograph each wall before plastering.
For a home with young children, specify shuttered sockets on every low point. We make them across our ranges: KEMPS K192 and K193, the VIZA V1269 3 pin (₹85) and, for 2 pin plugs only, the VIZA V262 (₹78). Our switch board buying guide covers build quality and ratings.
If you are changing an existing board, switch off the MCB and confirm the circuit is dead with a tester first. Moving a box is wall-chasing work for a licensed electrician.
