Choosing a modular socket
6A or 16A: match the appliance
A 6A socket is for light loads: phone and laptop chargers, lamps, the television, the router, a table fan. A 16A socket is for heavy heating and motor loads, typically the geyser, AC, heater, iron, microwave and washing machine; the fridge is commonly given one too. A 16A plug will not fit a 6A socket; the larger pins are a safety feature. Never defeat it with an adaptor, and remember that a bigger socket alone does not make a point safe: the circuit behind it must be sized and protected by a licensed electrician.
Universal, pins and shutters
A combined 6/16A universal socket takes both plug sizes, but belongs only on a circuit wired and protected for 16A. Five-pin sockets are 6A only. A Shutter keeps the openings closed until a plug goes in, which matters in any home with small children.
