DB Box or MCB Box? Distribution Board Terms Explained

DB Box vs MCB Box: Are They the Same Thing?

DB box vs MCB box is mostly a question of words: in an Indian home both mean the enclosure that holds the main switch and an MCB for every circuit, though “MCB box” also covers small one or two way boxes. Below we separate the DB, MCB box, switchboard, switchgear and consumer unit, show what goes inside and how many ways each device takes, and list the boxes we make in Mumbai with MRPs.

Key takeaways

  • DB box = MCB box in most homes — DB is the formal name, MCB box the trade name.
  • Small MCB box — a 1 to 4 way box for one load is not a DB; it is fed from one.
  • Switch board at home means the room switch plate; switchgear means the devices.
  • Consumer unit — the UK name for a home distribution board.
  • Our boxes — SPN white line from ₹380, PVC from ₹40, double door from ₹750, TPN from ₹2,620.

DB box vs MCB box: the short answer

A DB box and an MCB box are, in an Indian home, usually the same thing: the enclosure on the wall that holds the main switch and the MCBs for every circuit. “DB”, short for distribution board, is the formal electrical term. “MCB box” is the everyday trade name, named after the breakers inside it.

The difference shows up at the edges. “MCB box” is also used for a small surface box that holds just one or two MCBs, for a geyser or a pump, which nobody would call a distribution board. And “DB” on a drawing implies the whole assembly: enclosure, busbar, neutral link, earth bar and the devices fitted to them.

Two more words get mixed in. A “switch board” in Indian homes usually means the modular switch plate on a room wall, not the DB, while switchgear is the name for the devices themselves. This guide untangles all four terms, shows what goes inside a DB, and lists the MCB boxes and distribution boards we make at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai, so you can ask a dealer for the right one.

What is a DB box?

A DB box, or distribution board, is the enclosure where the incoming supply from the meter is split into separate circuits, each protected by its own MCB, and it holds the main switch, a busbar that feeds the MCBs, a neutral link, an earth bar and usually an RCCB.

The parts of a home DB, from top to bottom of the job they do:

Incomer: isolator or DP MCB RCCB for leakage Busbar feeding the MCBs Outgoing MCBs, one per circuit Neutral link Earth bar

The enclosure is measured in ways: one way is the space one single pole MCB takes. A double pole device takes two. The board comes in two supply types, SPN for single phase and TPN for three phase, explained in our SPN vs TPN distribution board guide.

What the DB does not include is anything to do with the room-level switches. Those are wired from the MCBs out to each switch plate.

The incoming terminals of a DB stay live from the meter side even with the main switch off. Opening one is work for a licensed electrician.

What is an MCB box?

An MCB box is the trade name for any enclosure made to hold MCBs, which covers both a full distribution board for a flat and a small one or two way surface box fitted near a single load such as a geyser, water pump or outdoor light, so the size or way-count tells you which one someone means.

In our catalogue, the term covers three kinds of box:

SPN white line MCB box: 2–4 to 16–18 way PVC surface MCB box: 1 to 4 way MCB distribution double door: 4 to 16 way, plus TPN

A small PVC box is not a DB. It gives a local cut-off, but the circuit feeding it still starts at an MCB in the main board. VIYONA 375 is a 1 & 2 way PVC surface MCB box with an MRP of ₹40, our smallest; the Royal 1 & 2 way (377) is ₹66 and the 3 & 4 way (376) ₹90.

When you ask a dealer for an “MCB box”, give the way-count and the supply type, and say whether it is for the main board or one load.

A small surface MCB box is never a substitute for the main board. It sits downstream of a proper MCB in the DB.

DB = MCB box

Same box in most homes; DB is the formal name.

Switch board ≠ DB

At home, a switch board is the plate on the room wall.

Switchgear = devices

MCBs, isolators and RCCBs that go inside the board.

Count ways, not circuits

Double pole devices take two ways each; add spares.

Distribution board vs switchboard: what is the difference?

In Indian homes, a distribution board is the enclosure of MCBs that splits the supply into circuits, while a switch board is usually the modular switch and socket plate on a room wall; in formal electrical engineering, switchboard can also mean a large free-standing panel in a building’s electrical room.

So the same word means two very different things depending on who says it:

Homeowner or electrician at home: Switch board = room switch plate DB = MCB box

Building or industrial drawing: Switchboard = main panel DB = smaller board fed from it

Our switch boards in the home sense are modular plates, switches and sockets; our how to choose a switch board guide covers them, and switch board wiring diagram shows how a plate connects back to its MCB.

The link between the two is one MCB per circuit in the DB, feeding the switch boards on that circuit.

When a quote says “switchboard”, check which one is meant. A modular plate and a building panel differ in price by orders of magnitude.

Switchboard vs switchgear: what is the difference?

Switchgear is the general name for the devices that switch and protect a circuit, such as MCBs, MCCBs, isolators, RCCBs and contactors, while a switchboard or distribution board is the assembly that houses those devices together with busbars, links and an enclosure.

Think of it as parts and the cabinet. An MCB on its own is switchgear. Put eight MCBs, an isolator and an RCCB on a busbar in a box, and you have a distribution board.

Common switchgear in homes and small buildings:

MCB: overload and short circuit Isolator: switching only RCCB: earth leakage MCCB: big feeders

Each has its own guide: isolator vs MCB, MCB vs MCCB and RCCB vs ELCB. Of these we make the MCBs and isolators, plus the boxes; we do not make RCCBs or MCCBs.

Switchgear ratings and the box must agree: a 63A isolator in a box with a busbar rated lower than that is a mismatch your electrician should catch.

Distribution board vs consumer unit: is it the same?

Yes, a consumer unit is broadly the same thing as a home distribution board: consumer unit is the term used in the UK and some other countries for the board in a dwelling that holds the main switch, RCD protection and MCBs, while in India the same box is usually called a DB, MCB box or distribution box.

You may see consumer unit on imported product listings or in international videos. The function is the same: split the supply into protected circuits. What differs is the local rules and products built around them, so follow Indian practice and your electrician, not a foreign video.

Other names for the same box you will hear in India:

DB DB box MCB box MCB distribution box Distribution board

In our catalogue, the formal name appears as MCB distribution double door, and the simpler single-phase box as the SPN white line MCB box. Both do the job of a home DB.

Names differ, the safety parts do not: whatever the box is called, it needs a main switch, an MCB per circuit, a neutral link, an earth bar and, as common practice, an RCCB.

Which MCB boxes and distribution boards do we make?

We make three kinds of MCB box at our Mumbai works: the SPN white line MCB box from 2–4 way to 16–18 way for single-phase homes, PVC surface boxes for one to four MCBs, and the MCB distribution double door board from 4 to 16 way, with TPN double door boards for three-phase supplies.

SPN white line 374, 16–18 way₹950
Double door 381, 4 way₹750
Double door 385, 12 way₹1,210
Double door 386, 16 way₹1,410

VIYONA MRPs from our current catalogue, bars to scale with ₹1,410 as the full bar.

VIYONA 373 is a 10–12 way SPN white line MCB box with an MRP of ₹620. The white line box costs less per way; the double door adds an outer door over the handles. See the SPN white line MCB box and the MCB distribution box range.

How many ways does each device take in a DB?

In a distribution board, a single pole MCB takes one way, a double pole MCB or isolator takes two, a three pole device three and a four pole device four, and an RCCB takes two or four depending on its poles, so the way-count of the box must cover every device, not just the number of circuits.

Ways taken by each device in the box

Single pole MCB1 way
Double pole MCB or isolator2 ways
Three pole MCB or isolator3 ways
Four pole MCB, isolator or RCCB4 ways

General practice for modular devices, not a test result; check the width printed on each device. Bars to scale with 4 ways as the full bar.

Some boards give the incomer its own space; others take it from the same rail. Always leave two or three spare ways. For counts by home size, see our MCB box size list.

Main DB or a small MCB box: which do you need?

You need a main DB when wiring or rewiring a home, shop or floor, so every circuit starts from one protected point, and a small MCB box only for a local cut-off on one or two loads, such as a geyser or pump, fed from an MCB already in the main DB.

Quick guide, as common practice:

New flat or rewiring: main DB Extra floor or wing: sub-DB Geyser or pump cut-off: 1–2 way box Shop counter: 2–4 way box

A sub-DB on another floor is a full distribution board fed from the main one, with its own incomer. A local box is simpler and cheaper but only switches or protects the load beside it.

For which MCB each circuit gets, see which MCB for home. For a full board, VIYONA 385 is a 12 way MCB distribution double door board with an MRP of ₹1,210.

Switch off the main MCB and confirm the circuit is dead with a tester before fixing any box to existing wiring. If you are unsure, call a licensed electrician.

How to ask a dealer for the right box

To get the right box from a dealer, give four things: whether it is a main distribution board or a small local MCB box, the supply type, SPN for single phase or TPN for three phase, the number of ways including spares, and whether you want a single door white line box or a double door board.

A complete request reads like this: main DB SPN 12 way double door, which in our range is the VIYONA 385. Or, for a geyser: 1 & 2 way PVC, the 375 or the Royal 377.

Quoting a product code avoids most mix-ups, because “MCB box” and “DB” mean different sizes to different people. For how brands compare on busbars, earth bars and IP ratings, see our best MCB box brand in India guide.

We sell through 500+ dealers with delivery across India, in full boxes only.

Order the MCBs and isolator with the box, by code, so the way-count is checked once against the actual devices.

FAQs

Is DB box and MCB box the same?
Yes, in most Indian homes a DB box and an MCB box are the same thing: the enclosure holding the main switch and the MCBs. MCB box can also mean a small one or two way box for a single load, which is not a full DB.
What is the difference between distribution board and switchboard?
At home, a distribution board holds the MCBs for every circuit while a switch board is the modular switch plate on a room wall. In building work, a switchboard can also mean the large main panel that feeds distribution boards.
What is the difference between switchboard and switchgear?
Switchgear is the devices, such as MCBs, isolators and RCCBs, while a switchboard or distribution board is the assembly that houses them on busbars inside an enclosure.
Is a consumer unit the same as a distribution board?
Broadly, yes. Consumer unit is the UK term for the board in a home that holds the main switch, RCD and MCBs; in India the same box is called a DB or MCB box.
What is the full form of DB in electrical?
DB stands for distribution board, the enclosure where the supply from the meter is divided into separate circuits, each protected by its own MCB.
