Panel Light vs Downlight: Which Ceiling LED Suits the Room?

Panel Light vs Downlight vs Surface Light: Which to Use

Panel light vs downlight is the first choice on any false-ceiling job, and surface lights are the answer when there is no false ceiling at all. A panel spreads wide, even light from a flat diffused face; a downlight is a smaller recessed fitting with a more focused pool of light; a surface light sits on the slab. Below: the difference, which suits a bedroom, panel vs COB, what “concealed” means, the wattages and MRPs we make, price per watt, 3 in 1 panels, drivers and tube lights.

Key takeaways

  • Panel — wide, even, diffused light from a flat face; ours run 8W to 22W at ₹290 to ₹600 MRP.
  • Downlight — smaller and recessed, a more focused pool of light; ours are 3W, 5W and 6W at ₹100 to ₹160.
  • Surface light — fixed on the slab, so no false ceiling needed; ours run 6W to 22W at ₹160 to ₹700.
  • COB and spotlights — directional accent light. We do not make them.
  • ⚠ Count and spacing come from your electrician or lighting plan, not a watts-per-square-foot rule.

Panel light vs downlight vs surface light: the short answer

A panel light is a flat fitting with a wide diffused face that spreads even light across a room. A downlight is a smaller round or square fitting set into a false ceiling that throws a more focused pool of light below it. A surface light sits on the ceiling slab itself, so it needs no false ceiling at all.

None of the three is “better” in general. The ceiling you have decides the mounting, and the job the light does decides the shape: broad general light from panels, spaced points of light from downlights, and a fitting on a bare slab from a surface light.

We make all three in our VIYONA LED range at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai, square and round, along with the drivers that run them. This guide sets them side by side with the MRPs from our current price list, works out the price per watt, and names what we do not make: COB lights and spotlights.

It does not give lumen, beam-angle or colour-temperature figures, because our price list does not state them, and it does not give a “watts per square foot” rule. How many fittings a room needs, and how far apart, is for your electrician or lighting plan.

What is the difference between a panel light and a downlight?

The difference between a panel light and a downlight is size and spread: a panel light has a larger flat diffused face that washes a wide area with even light, while a downlight is a smaller fitting that directs a tighter pool of light downward, so one panel often does the work that several spaced downlights would share.

Both are LED luminaires, and in our catalogue both are listed against IS 10322 with registration R-71026476. Our LED down lights come in 3W, 5W and 6W. Our panels run from 8W to 22W across three series. Both are sold square & round.

Several small downlights can add up to more watts than one panel. Add up every fitting on a switch before comparing layouts.

Downlight vs panel light: which is better for a bedroom?

For a bedroom, a diffused panel usually suits the main ceiling light because its large, even face is soft when you look up from the bed, while downlights suit a false-ceiling bedroom where you want light spread in several points, for example over a wardrobe and a dressing area, rather than from one central fitting.

The thing to avoid in a bedroom is glare: a small bright source directly over the pillow. A diffused face cuts that, which is why our diffuse light guide recommends diffused fittings where people look up, such as a bedroom ceiling. If the bedroom has no false ceiling, a surface light gives the same kind of soft light without cutting into the slab.

For a bedroom-sized ceiling, the wattages people usually look at in our range are the 12W and 15W panels, or a few 5W–6W downlights. Which, and how many, depends on the room and the plan; your electrician decides the count and the spacing.

Ask where each fitting will sit relative to the bed before the false ceiling is cut. Moving a cut-out later means patching the ceiling.

Panel

Wide, even light from a flat diffused face; 8W to 22W, ₹290 to ₹600.

Down light

A smaller recessed fitting for spaced points of light; 3W to 6W, ₹100 to ₹160.

Surface light

Fixed on the slab, so no false ceiling needed; 6W to 22W, ₹160 to ₹700.

Driver

Panel drivers 1041 (9W to 15W, ₹180) and 1042 (18W to 22W, ₹200), sold separately.

Panel light vs surface light: do you need a false ceiling?

A recessed panel light needs a false ceiling, because it sits inside a cut-out with space above it for the body and the driver, while a surface light does not, because it is fixed straight onto the ceiling slab, which makes it the usual choice for older flats, rented homes and shops with a plain concrete ceiling.

That is the real decision between the two. The light from both is broad and diffused. What changes is the ceiling. With a false ceiling, a recessed panel sits flush. On a bare slab, a surface light avoids chasing into concrete.

Our surface LED lights come in 10W, 15W and 22W (the big surface series, 1003 to 1005, ₹360 to ₹700), and the borderless surface lights in 15W and 20W (1007 and 1008, ₹450 and ₹600). VIYONA LED 1005 is a 22W big surface LED light with an MRP of ₹700.

No false ceiling and no plan to add one? Start with a surface light. It can also be changed later without cutting the ceiling.

Concealed vs surface light: what does “concealed” mean?

A concealed light, also called a recessed light, is one whose body is hidden above the ceiling so that only the face shows, flush with the ceiling line, while a surface light keeps its whole body visible below the ceiling, so “concealed vs surface” is about where the fitting’s body sits, not about the light it gives.

Panels and downlights are usually concealed in a false ceiling. Our list also carries one small fitting whose name combines both words: the 1006 concealed surface LED light 6W at ₹160. We list it in the surface family; check how it fixes with your dealer before you plan the ceiling around it.

The same word turns up on electrical boxes: a concealed box goes inside the wall, a surface box sits on it. The idea is the same. A concealed fitting needs the cavity planned at the wiring stage; a surface fitting can go up afterwards.

Before ordering a recessed fitting, confirm the depth available above the false ceiling and the cut-out the fitting needs. Measure, then order.

Panel light vs COB light: which is better?

A panel light is better where you want wide, even, low-glare light across a room, and a COB light is better where you want a concentrated, more directional beam on one spot, because a COB (chip on board) packs many LED chips onto one small board while a panel spreads its LEDs behind a large diffuser.

The same logic answers “downlight vs COB light” and “downlight vs spotlight”. A downlight lights the area below it; a COB fitting or a spotlight picks out a picture, a shelf or a feature wall. Many rooms use both: panels or downlights for general light, a few directional fittings for accent.

We do not make COB lights and we do not make spotlights. If the room needs accent lighting, buy that from a brand that makes it. What we make for ceilings is panels, downlights and surface lights, all with a diffused face, listed on our LED light manufacturers in Mumbai page.

For a bedroom, the question “panel or COB?” usually comes down to glare. For the main light, a diffused panel is the gentler choice.

What wattage LED panel lights do we make, and at what MRP?

We make LED panel lights in 8W, 9W, 10W, 12W, 15W and 22W across three series, square and round, with MRPs from ₹290 for the 9W aluminium casting slim panel to ₹600 for the 22W super slim and 22W aluminium casting panels, plus 3 in 1 versions at 9W and 15W.

MRP of our LED panels by wattage

8W super slim (1031)₹300
9W casting slim (1026)₹290
10W Ultra Prime (1021)₹300
12W super slim (1032)₹370
15W Ultra Prime / slim (1022, 1025)₹400
15W super slim (1033)₹420
22W Ultra Prime (1023)₹580
22W super slim / casting (1034, 1028)₹600

MRPs from our January 2026 LED price list; bars to scale with ₹600 as the full bar, rounded to the nearest 5%. The 15W aluminium casting slim panel (1027) is also ₹400.

So the 15 watt LED panel price at MRP is ₹400 (1022, 1025, 1027) or ₹420 (1033), and the 22 watt LED panel price is ₹580 (1023) or ₹600 (1028, 1034). VIYONA LED 1033 is a 15W super slim panel, round or square, with an MRP of ₹420. See the Ultra Prime & slim panel series and the aluminium slim panel series.

Same wattage, different series: at 15W our panels run from ₹400 to ₹420, and the 3 in 1 versions from ₹490 to ₹590. Pick the series for the housing and finish you want.

Which is cheaper per watt: a panel, a downlight or a surface light?

Per watt of rated power, our 22W Ultra Prime panel is among the cheapest ceiling fittings at about ₹26.36 a watt, level with the 6W downlight and 6W concealed surface light at about ₹26.67, while small and feature fittings cost more per watt, up to ₹50 a watt for the 9W 3 in 1 panel.

MRP per watt of rated power, selected fittings

20W T5 tube fitting (1059)₹10.00/W
22W Ultra Prime panel (1023)₹26.36/W
6W down light (1012)₹26.67/W
6W concealed surface (1006)₹26.67/W
15W super slim panel (1033)₹28.00/W
15W big surface (1004)₹30.00/W
8W super slim panel (1031)₹37.50/W
9W 3 in 1 casting panel (1029)₹50.00/W

MRP divided by the wattage in the fitting’s name: for example ₹580 ÷ 22 = ₹26.36 and ₹300 ÷ 8 = ₹37.50. Bars to scale with ₹50 as the full bar, rounded to the nearest 5%. Watts are power drawn, not light given.

Two cautions. Price per watt is not light per rupee: our list gives no lumen figures, so it compares cost against power, nothing more. And a cheaper fitting per watt is only a saving if the room needs that wattage. Running cost is set by the watts; our guide to saving electricity at home works out units per month.

Compare a quote with the MRP first, then the price per watt. A fitting with no MRP, no code and no registration number on the box is worth a second look.

The same price-per-watt arithmetic for outdoor fittings is in our LED flood light and street light price guide.

What is a 3 in 1 LED panel?

A 3 in 1 LED panel is, in common practice, a panel with three selectable light colours; in our range that is the 1029 9W and 1027A 15W aluminium casting slim panels and the 1035 15W super slim panel, each at a higher MRP than the plain panel of the same wattage.

Our catalogue lists them as 3 IN 1 (the dealer list spells the super slim one 3IN ONE) but does not describe the three modes, so confirm the variant on the product: ask the dealer to show you how the panel switches between them before you buy.

The prices are clear. The 1029 9W 3 in 1 is ₹450 against ₹290 for the plain 9W (1026). The 1027A 15W 3 in 1 is ₹490 against ₹400 for the plain 15W (1027). The 1035 15W 3 in 1 super slim is ₹590 against ₹420 for the plain 1033.

A 3 in 1 panel costs ₹90 to ₹170 more than the plain panel of the same wattage at MRP. Pay it only if you will use the extra modes.

Why does an LED panel need a driver?

An LED panel needs a driver because its LEDs run on low-voltage direct current while the house supply is alternating mains, so the driver converts one to the other; the label on our 1041 panel driver, as printed in our catalogue, reads input 90 to 240 V AC and output 40 to 75 V DC.

We make two panel drivers, listed against IS 15885 with registration R-71026310: the 1041 for 9W to 15W at ₹180 and the 1042 for 18W to 22W at ₹200. Selling them separately means a panel with a failed driver can often be repaired instead of thrown away.

Match the driver to the wattage band of the panel, not just its size. Our 8W super slim panel falls outside both listed bands, so ask us which driver suits it rather than guessing.

The driver label carries the warning “output not mains isolated”. Switch off the MCB and confirm the circuit is dead with a tester before opening any LED fitting; if unsure, call a licensed electrician.

Tube light vs panel light: which is better?

A tube light suits long, narrow spaces and work areas such as a kitchen counter, garage or shop shelf, where a linear fitting on the wall or ceiling is easy to place, while a panel light suits a false ceiling where you want the fitting flush and the light spread from a flat face, so the room shape usually decides.

MRP of a tube fitting against ceiling fittings of similar wattage

20W T5 tube fitting (1059)₹200
20W borderless surface (1008)₹600
22W super slim panel (1034)₹600
22W Ultra Prime panel (1023)₹580

MRPs from our January 2026 LED price list; bars to scale with ₹600 as the full bar, rounded to the nearest 5%. A tube fitting and a panel are different shapes of light, not substitutes in every room.

Our LED tube fittings come in 6W, 12W, 20W and 40W, the 12W and 20W as T5 PVC fittings and the 40W as a T8 PVC fitting (₹600). The 20W tube fitting is the lowest cost per watt of the fittings compared here. The panel is the neater ceiling.

Which LED panel light is best? A buying checklist

The best LED panel light for your ceiling is one with a BIS registration number for IS 10322 that verifies for the maker, a driver in the right wattage band with its own registration, the correct shape and cut-out for your false ceiling, and a public MRP you can check a quote against, whichever brand makes it.

Registration: look for an IS 10322 R-number on the panel or carton and check it; our guide to spotting a fake ISI mark shows how. Driver: check its band and its IS 15885 number. Size: square or round, and the cut-out your false ceiling needs. Wattage: the one your lighting plan calls for, not the biggest. MRP: compare it with the price list.

For the brands sold nationally and the checks that separate them, see the best LED light brand in India. For low-level lights that fit a switch-board plate rather than a ceiling, such as the VIZA V1312 4-module LED down light at ₹460, see our 4-module foot light page.

We do not sell online. Order full boxes from a dealer, call us, or visit our Mumbai works; panels and down lights come 10 or 20 to a box, as listed.

FAQs

Which is better, a downlight or a panel light?
A panel light is better for broad, even light across a room from fewer fittings; a downlight is better for spaced points of light in a false ceiling. Both are LED luminaires to IS 10322. Our downlights are 3W to 6W (₹100 to ₹160 MRP) and our panels 8W to 22W (₹290 to ₹600).
What is an LED panel light?
An LED panel light is a flat ceiling fitting with a large diffused face that spreads even light, recessed into a false ceiling and run by a driver that converts mains to low-voltage DC. We make them square and round in 8W to 22W.
What is the price of a 15 watt and a 22 watt LED panel light?
At our MRP, a 15W panel is ₹400 (1022, 1025, 1027) or ₹420 (1033 super slim), and a 22W panel ₹580 (1023 Ultra Prime) or ₹600 (1028, 1034). The 15W 3 in 1 panels are ₹490 (1027A) and ₹590 (1035).
Do panel lights need a false ceiling?
A recessed panel light needs a false ceiling with space above it. Without one, use a surface light, which fixes straight onto the slab; ours run from 6W to 22W at ₹160 to ₹700 MRP.
Do you make COB lights or spotlights?
No, Vinayak Electricals does not make COB lights or spotlights. For ceilings we make LED panels, down lights and surface lights, plus tube fittings and the panel drivers that run them.
