Surface Panel Lights for Ceilings Without a False Ceiling

Surface Panel Light: Without False Ceiling, Watts and Price
A surface panel light fixes straight onto the ceiling slab, so it needs no false ceiling. We make VIYONA surface LED lights in round and square, from a 6W at ₹160 to a 22W at ₹700 MRP, at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai. Here is how each one fixes, which watt suits which room, and what a box costs.

Key takeaways

  • A surface panel light screws onto the slab over the existing ceiling point: no false ceiling, no cut-out.
  • Our range: 6W ₹160 (1006), 10W ₹360, 15W ₹450, 22W ₹700 (big surface), and 15W ₹450, 20W ₹600 (borderless).
  • At 15W the big and borderless lights cost the same; borderless packs 20 per box, the rest 10.
  • Start at 6W for passages, 15W for a bedroom and 20W to 22W for a kitchen or living room.
  • Building a false ceiling anyway? A recessed panel usually suits better.

What is a surface panel light?

A surface panel light is a flat LED ceiling light that screws straight onto the slab instead of sitting inside a cut-out in a false ceiling. Its whole body, driver included, stays below the ceiling line, so it needs no gypsum board, no POP work and no void above it. That is why it is the usual answer for older flats, rented homes, shops with a bare concrete ceiling and any room where the false ceiling was never made or has been taken down.

From below it looks much like a recessed panel: a round or square face that spreads soft, even light. The difference is the edge. A recessed panel sits flush; a surface light stands a few centimetres proud of the ceiling, and its rim is part of the look.

We make surface lights at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai, under the VIYONA LED name, in three bodies: the big surface light, the borderless surface light and a small concealed surface light. This page covers watts, MRPs, how they fix and which one suits which room.

How a surface light fixes to a bare slab

The fitting has two parts. A mounting plate is screwed to the slab with wall plugs, and the light body then locks or screws onto that plate. The supply comes from the existing ceiling point: the box where a batten, tube or bulb holder used to hang.

Inside the body sits the LED driver, which turns 230 V mains into the DC the LEDs run on. The face is a diffuser, so you see an even glow rather than bright dots.

Drawn by us, not to scale. The body hides the ceiling point, so centre the plate over it before drilling.

Because nothing goes into the ceiling, the only things to get right are the plate centred on the point and a slab solid enough to hold the screws.

Big surface or borderless: what changes

The big surface series (1003, 1004, 1005) has a visible rim around the lit face. It comes in 10W, 15W and 22W, and the rim gives it a framed, finished look on a plain white ceiling.

The borderless series (1007, 1008) lights almost to the edge, so the whole disc or square glows. It comes in 15W and 20W and reads as lighter and more modern, especially in a low room where a thick rim feels heavy.

Two practical differences matter more than looks:

  • Same 15W price: 1004 and 1007 are both ₹450 MRP.
  • Box quantity: big surface lights pack 10 per box; borderless pack 20 per box.
  • Top watt: the big series goes to 22W; the borderless stops at 20W.

For a whole flat, pick one series and stay with it so every room matches.

The 6W concealed surface light

The 1006 concealed surface LED light is the small one of the family: 6W at ₹160 MRP, packed 10 per box. Our catalogue lists it in the surface light family as a concealed surface light but does not say how it mounts, so ask us how the 1006 fixes before planning it for a bare slab. It is small enough to suit places where a full panel would look oversized.

Use it where you want a point of light, not a room light: a passage, a bathroom ceiling, a balcony under a slab, a wardrobe niche or the space above a kitchen counter. Several in a line along a corridor give more even light than one bigger fitting at one end.

A bathroom or open balcony sees steam and blown rain. Our catalogue does not print an IP rating for the surface lights, so for a spot that gets wet, ask us for the rating of the exact code before fitting it there.

Which watt for which room

Without a false ceiling there is usually one ceiling point per room, so one surface light does the job a set of recessed panels would share. As common practice in Indian flats:

  • 6W: passage, bathroom, store, balcony (1006).
  • 10W: small bedroom, kitchenette, study corner (1003).
  • 15W: typical bedroom of about 10 to 12 sq m (1004 or 1007); a kitchen usually needs a 20W to 22W light or a second light over the counter.
  • 20W to 22W: living room or hall (1008 or 1005).

Treat this as a starting point. Room size, ceiling height and wall colour all change the answer, and a large hall may need two lights on two points. Our guide on how many lights a room needs works it out by lux, and lumens vs watts explains why the lumen figure on the carton matters more than the watt figure.

One fitting on one existing point means no chasing, no new wiring and no plaster repair. That is where a surface light saves real money.

Replacing a tube light or batten

The most common job for a surface light is replacing an old tube light or batten on a bare slab. The point is already there, so the work is: switch off the MCB, take down the old fitting, check the wires, fix the new plate over the point and connect phase and neutral to the driver terminals.

Two things catch people out. First, a tube sat on a wall or at the ceiling edge, while a surface light wants the centre of the ceiling; moving the point means new conduit or surface casing. Second, an old point may have tired, brittle wire insulation; replace that length rather than joining onto it.

If you are deciding between a new LED tube and a surface light for the same spot, our tube light guide compares the two for homes.

When a false ceiling changes the answer

If you are putting in a false ceiling anyway, a recessed panel usually makes more sense: it sits flush and spreads light from several points. Our super slim panel light range runs 8W to 22W, and our panel light vs downlight vs surface light guide lays out all three side by side.

For recessed panels across all our series, see our LED panel light manufacturer page. Keep the surface light where the ceiling is bare concrete, where you are renting and cannot open the ceiling, or where a beam leaves no room for a void.

Shape is a separate question, answered the same way for surface and recessed fittings: see round vs square panel light.

Colour of light: warm, natural or cool

A surface light is the only ceiling light in most rooms without a false ceiling, so its colour sets the mood of the whole room. Three broad choices exist: warm white, yellowish and relaxed; natural white, in between; and cool white, crisp and bluish, the old tube-light look.

As common practice, warm or natural white suits bedrooms and living rooms, while cool white suits kitchens, study tables and shops where people read labels. Our guide to warm white vs cool white goes room by room.

Our catalogue does not list a separate colour code for each surface light, so ask the dealer which colour the box in front of you carries before you buy a whole box. If one family cannot agree, a 3 in 1 panel light lets you switch between three colours from the same wall switch, but it is a recessed panel, not a surface light.

Surface lights in shops, clinics and offices

Many small shops, clinics and offices in Mumbai run on a bare slab with exposed conduit. A false ceiling there costs money, collects dust and hides wiring the owner may want to reach. A row of surface lights on the existing points does the job without any of that.

For a shop, the borderless 20W (1008, ₹600) gives a clean, wide glow over a counter, and two or three in a line light a narrow shop more evenly than one bright fitting. For a clinic cabin or office cabin of bedroom size, the 15W lights are the starting point.

Shelves and display walls usually need more than ceiling light. Our guide to LED lights for a shop covers tube fittings and other options for shelves, and how many fittings a shop of a given size needs.

Because the 15W big and borderless lights share one MRP per piece, a shop can choose on looks; note the borderless box holds 20, so the smallest order is ₹9,000 against ₹4,500.

Fitting mistakes to avoid

  • Working live: switch off the MCB, not just the wall switch, and test the point dead.
  • Switching the neutral: the switch must break the phase, or the driver stays live when the light is off.
  • Driver squashed: do not force spare cable into the body against the driver; leave it room.
  • Weak slab: old plaster may crumble; drill into concrete and use proper wall plugs.
  • Mixed series: buying from two series leaves rims that do not match.

A faint glow after switch-off almost always points to wiring, not the fitting; our guide to LED glowing when switched off explains why. For flicker, see why LED lights flicker.

If you are not sure which wire is phase, stop and call an electrician. A wrongly wired fitting can stay live while the switch is off.

Buying surface lights by the box

We sell in full boxes only, not single pieces, which suits contractors and dealers fitting out several flats. The box sizes differ by series:

  • 1003, 1004, 1005, 1006: 10 per box.
  • 1007, 1008: 20 per box.

So a box of 1004 big 15W lights comes to ₹4,500 at MRP, and a box of 1007 borderless 15W lights comes to ₹9,000, because it holds twenty. A box of the 6W 1006 is ₹1,600. Warranty runs 5 to 10 years by product; ask your dealer for the term on the code you buy.

The surface LED light product page lists every code in one place.

FAQs

What is a surface panel light?
A flat LED ceiling light that screws onto the slab instead of sitting in a false ceiling cut-out. Its body and driver stay below the ceiling, so no false ceiling is needed.
What is the price of a surface panel light?
Our surface LED lights run from ₹160 for the 6W (1006) to ₹700 for the 22W big surface light (1005) at MRP. The 15W is ₹450 in both the big and borderless series.
Which watt surface light is right for a bedroom?
A 15W surface light is the common starting point for a typical bedroom of about 10 to 12 sq m. A small bedroom can manage with 10W, and the lumen figure on the carton is the better guide.
Can I fit a surface panel light without a false ceiling?
Yes. That is what it is for: the mounting plate screws to the concrete slab over the existing ceiling point.
What is the difference between big surface and borderless surface lights?
The big surface light has a rim around the lit face and comes in 10W, 15W and 22W; the borderless light glows almost to the edge and comes in 15W and 20W. Borderless lights pack 20 per box, the others 10.
Can I replace a tube light with a surface panel light?
Yes, on the same point, with the MCB off. If the tube was on a wall and you want the light at the ceiling centre, the point has to be moved first.
