What is a concealed box?
Every modular switch board has three parts you pay for separately: the modules (switches, sockets, regulators), the plate with its frame, and the box in the wall. The concealed box is set into the plaster when the wiring is laid, so the plate finishes flush with the wall.
Its size is counted in modules, the same as the plate: a 6M plate needs a 6M box. Get the box wrong at the wiring stage and the plate will not fit later, which is why the box is chosen before the switches.

The 8M comes in two shapes: horizontal (₹130) for a long board and square (₹145) for a 4 by 2 arrangement. Match the box to the plate shape you will fit.

Unbreakable plastic or G.I. sheet metal?
- Unbreakable plastic: light, does not rust, and the usual choice for homes and offices. 6M ₹118.
- G.I. sheet metal: galvanised steel, sturdier against rough handling on site. 6M ₹170 (V624).
Both take the same plates. On most home jobs the plastic box is enough; a contractor working with heavy wall chasing may prefer metal.
Whichever you choose, the box must sit square and flush. A box set crooked in the plaster makes the plate rock and the screws strip.
A 6M plate needs a 6M box; choose it before the switches.

Surface wiring: the surface gang box

Renovating: can the old box stay?
On a renovation, a sound modular box already in the wall can usually stay, which takes the box off the bill. Check that it is the right size for the new plate, sits square and flush, and is not cracked or loose.
