Geyser Socket: Which One, How High and How It Connects

Geyser Socket: Rating, Height, Connection and Price
A geyser socket is a 16A three pin socket, ideally with a porcelain base, fixed about 6 ft up beside the geyser on a circuit of its own, with its switch and indicator outside the bathroom. A 2,000 to 3,000 W geyser draws 8.7 to 13 A, so nothing smaller will do. Here are the rating, height, connection and the MRPs of the parts we make in Mumbai.

Key takeaways

  • Rating: a 16A socket. A 2,000 to 3,000 W geyser draws 8.7 to 13 A at 230 V; a 6A socket carries only 1,380 W.
  • Choose a porcelain base: VIZA V263 ₹160, VIZA Black V1266 ₹179, VIYONA 154 ₹93.
  • Height: about 6 ft (1,830 mm) beside the geyser; the switch with indicator outside at about 4 ft.
  • Connection: phase via the switch, neutral, and earth to the top hole, on the geyser’s own MCB.
  • A VIZA plug-in geyser point costs ₹384 at MRP, parts only.

What is a geyser socket?

A geyser socket is the 16A three pin socket a plug-in water heater connects to. It sits high on the bathroom wall, close to the geyser, while the switch that controls it usually sits outside the bathroom door with an indicator. The geyser has a 16A plug, and the socket, its switch, the MCB and the wire behind it are all chosen for a load that runs for 10 to 30 minutes at a time, every day, in the wettest room of the home.

Not every geyser has a socket. Some are wired straight to a DP switch with no plug at all. Our geyser switch guide covers that switch and the indicator in detail. This page is about the socket: what rating it needs, how high it goes, how it is connected and what it costs, with the codes we make at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai.

What rating a geyser socket needs

Storage geysers in Indian homes are typically 2,000 to 3,000 W. At 230 V that is about 8.7 A to 13 A while the element heats. Only one socket covers that with margin: the 16A socket, which carries up to 3,680 W.

Geyser watts against what each socket carries

16A socket3,680 W
3,000 W geyser3,000 W
2,000 W geyser2,000 W
6A socket1,380 W

Socket capacity = amps x 230 V; geyser figures are typical nameplate ratings, not our test results. Bars to scale.

A 6A socket cannot carry even the smaller geyser. That is why a geyser’s 16A plug will not fit a 6A socket, and why an adaptor that makes it fit is dangerous. Our 16 amp socket guide covers the 16A socket in general.

Which 16A socket for a geyser

For a geyser, choose a 16A socket with a porcelain base. Porcelain does not soften or char where a contact runs warm, and a geyser socket carries its full load more often than any other socket in the home.

  • VIZA V263 ₹160 16A socket with porcelain base, listed as 2M in our product data.
  • VIZA Black V1266 ₹179 16A porcelain socket for black or grey boards.
  • VIYONA 154 ₹93 6 & 16A universal socket with porcelain base, for conventional boards.
  • KEMPS K193 ₹205 6A & 16AX universal socket with shutter, where the bathroom board is KEMPS.

The PC versions, V264 at ₹150 and V1267 at ₹170, also carry 16A. The porcelain base is a small premium for a heater point. Our porcelain switch guide explains the material.

All of these are packed 10 per box. A builder fitting a tower usually standardises on one porcelain code for every bathroom, so a spare from one flat fits any other.

16A, nothing less

A geyser draws up to 13 A; a 6A socket is never a geyser point.

Geyser socket height and position

The geyser point is commonly fixed about 6 ft (1,830 mm) from the finished floor, close to the geyser, so the short cord reaches without strain. The switch for it goes outside the bathroom on the board by the door, at the room’s board line of about 4 ft (1,220 mm).

Where the geyser socket and its switch go

Drawn by us, not to scale. Heights are common practice in Indian homes, measured to the centre of the box.

Keep the socket on the geyser side of the bathroom, out of reach of anyone standing under the shower and as far from the spray as the geyser position allows, and above most splashes. Our switch board height guide and bathroom electrical points guide give every other bathroom height.

How a geyser socket is connected

Three wires run from the distribution board to the geyser point, on a circuit of its own:

  • Phase from the MCB to the switch outside the door, then on to the socket’s live hole.
  • Neutral straight to the socket’s neutral hole.
  • Earth to the large top hole. On a metal tank full of water this is the wire that matters most.

Seen from the front, live is on the right and neutral on the left. The 16 amp socket guide has a drawn wiring diagram of the full point. The circuit goes on a 16A MCB, never a 20A one, with at least 2.5 sq mm wire, which our wire table rates at 18 A in conduit; our wire size for AC and geyser guide sets the cable for a larger geyser or a long run.

Switch off the MCB and prove the point dead with a tester before anyone touches a geyser connection. The wiring is a job for a licensed electrician.

The plug on the geyser cord

The geyser cord ends in a 16A 3 pin plug. If the original plug is cracked, loose or brown at the pins, replace it. Our VIYONA 16A plug tops are the Deluxe 242 ₹105 and the Royal 244 ₹110; the Royal also comes in a clear body, 246 ₹110, which shows the terminals without opening it.

A plug that no longer grips the socket heats under a geyser’s current, and the heat moves into the socket. When you change a worn plug, check the socket too: if its holes are loose or its face is discoloured, change both. Our 3 pin plug guide shows how a plug top is fitted.

A geyser plug that is warm to the touch after a bath is not normal. It means a loose contact somewhere in the plug or socket.

Socket or hard-wired DP switch?

Both are common, and the choice usually follows the geyser:

  • Plug-in, with a socket easy to unplug for service or replacement; the switch outside is a 16A or 20A one with an indicator.
  • Hard-wired, with a DP switch no plug to work loose; the 32A DP switch breaks phase and neutral together. VIZA V225 with indicator is ₹295 and VIZA Black V1250 is ₹330.

Many instant geysers draw 3,000 W or more while water flows, and their manuals often ask for hard wiring and a specific breaker. Read the manual before choosing the point. The geyser switch guide compares the switch options and prices.

What a geyser point costs at MRP

Two plug-in geyser points, parts only:

  • VIZA inside: V263 16A socket ₹160 on a V1152 Cherry 2M plate ₹65 with a V611 box ₹50; outside: a V123 20A switch with indicator ₹109 added to the door board. Total ₹384.
  • KEMPS K193 universal socket ₹205 on an Orchid K302 2M plate ₹102 with a V611 box ₹50; outside, a K108 20AX switch with indicator ₹120. Total ₹477.

On a conventional board, the VIYONA 151 16A 1 way switch (ISI mark, ₹74) and the 154 porcelain socket (₹93) come to ₹167. The MCB, the wire and labour are extra. Our switch board price guide prices whole rooms, and our socket price list has every socket.

Bathroom safety around the geyser socket

  • Earth at the point confirmed by an electrician, not assumed.
  • No joints in the shower wall: the cable should run unbroken in conduit.
  • 30 mA RCCB on the circuit: we recommend one on every bathroom circuit for shock protection; we do not make RCCBs, so ask your electrician to fit one.
  • Switch off after use: an indicator outside the door makes a geyser left on easy to see.

If you ever feel a tingle from a tap or the geyser body, switch the geyser off at the MCB and have the earthing tested before anyone showers. Our earthing check guide explains what the electrician looks for.

Upgrading an old geyser point

In many older flats the geyser was added after the wiring was done, and it shows: a 6A socket with an adaptor, a cord running down to a low socket, or a light switch doing the job of a geyser switch. Replacing the geyser is the right time to fix the point too.

  • Socket a 16A porcelain socket at about 6 ft, beside the new geyser.
  • Switch a 20A switch with indicator outside, or a 32A DP switch if the geyser will be wired in.
  • Circuit its own 16A MCB and 2.5 sq mm cable from the DB, with a 30 mA RCCB; an old point tapped off a light circuit is usually 1.5 sq mm, which our wire table, for wire made for us by a partner, rates at 13 A in conduit.
  • Earth a proper earth to the point, tested.

If the walls are tiled, a surface conduit to the new point is often tidier than chasing through tiles. Our rewiring signs guide helps decide whether to stop at the bathroom or go further.

Never move a new 3,000 W geyser onto the old point just because the plug fits. Have the circuit read at the DB first.

Signs a geyser socket needs replacing

Because it carries about 8.7 to 13 amps for long stretches, the geyser socket shows wear before any other socket in the home. Replace it when you see brown marks around the holes, a plug that falls out or turns easily, a burning smell after a bath, or an MCB that trips when the geyser starts.

A replacement 16A socket clips into the same plate and box, so the job is the socket and an hour of an electrician’s time. Our guides to a hot switch or sparking socket and to a loose socket go through the checks.
