Buying at Mumbai's Electrical Wholesale Market: A Practical Guide

Electrical Wholesale Market in Mumbai: Where and How to Buy

The electrical wholesale market in Mumbai is Lohar Chawl in Kalbadevi, next to Crawford Market, where electricians, contractors and shop owners buy switches, MCBs, wire and LED lights by the box. Below we show where it is and how to reach it, how wholesale buying works (box quantities, MRP versus dealer rate, GST bills), how to check an ISI mark on the spot, what to look for when buying LED lights or switches in bulk, and when buying from a manufacturer such as our Marol works makes more sense.

Key takeaways

  • Where — Lohar Chawl, Kalbadevi, beside Crawford Market; nearest stations Marine Lines (Western) and Masjid (Central and Harbour).
  • How — goods are sold by the box; round every line of your list up to full boxes.
  • Price — MRP is a tax-inclusive ceiling; a dealer price is usually below it, and a price far below it is a warning.
  • Check — verify the CM/L or R-number in the BIS CARE app and take a GST tax invoice every time.
  • Direct — for projects and regular re-orders, a manufacturer or its dealer gives test reports, fixed box quantities and a written warranty.

Electrical wholesale market in Mumbai: the short answer

The electrical wholesale market in Mumbai is Lohar Chawl, a crowded grid of lanes in Kalbadevi, South Mumbai, beside Crawford Market. It is the city’s main wholesale hub for electrical goods and lighting: switches, sockets, MCBs, wire, LED lights, fans and decorative fittings, sold mostly by the box to electricians, contractors and shop owners. Marine Lines on the Western line and Masjid on the Central and Harbour lines are the nearest local stations.

Going there is the easy part. Buying well is harder. A wholesale counter moves fast, prices are quoted against MRP, and a box of switches with a fake ISI mark looks much like a genuine one.

We are not a shop in Lohar Chawl. We make KEMPS and VIZA modular switches and plates, VIYONA conventional switches, MCBs and LED lights at our works in Marol, Andheri East, in the city’s northern suburbs. This guide is what we would tell a buyer heading south with a list: where the market is, how wholesale buying works, what to check on every box, and when buying from a manufacturer makes more sense than buying at a market counter.

Where is Lohar Chawl, and how do you get there?

Lohar Chawl sits in Kalbadevi, postcode 400002, a few minutes’ walk from Crawford Market. Many of its shops give their address on or off Mangaldas Road. The name comes from lohar, Marathi for ironsmith; today the lanes are packed with electrical and lighting wholesalers.

Where Lohar Chawl is: stations nearby, and our works in Marol

Diagram: sketch map of Lohar Chawl in Kalbadevi near Marine Lines and Masjid stations, and our works at Marol, Andheri East

Drawn by us, approximate and not to scale. Station positions are simplified to show which side of the market each sits on. Masjid is served by Central and Harbour line trains.

By local train, get off at Marine Lines on the Western line or Masjid on the Central and Harbour lines, then walk or take a short cab ride. From Andheri, a route planner puts the train trip at 40 to 50 minutes; Harbour line trains run from Andheri to Masjid without a change. By road, allow extra time at peak hours.

Plan for the crowd: the lanes are narrow and very busy. If you are carrying cash or collecting several boxes, go early in the day and arrange the tempo before you start buying, not after.

Shop hours vary. Listings for shops in the area commonly show 9 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday, but these are not official, so call ahead before a long trip.

What Lohar Chawl sells, and what it does not

Most of the trade in Lohar Chawl falls into a few groups: switches and sockets, MCBs and DB boxes, wire and cable, LED lights and fittings, fans and decorative and festive lights. Before Diwali, shoppers come for festive lights and decorations as much as for wiring material.

You will find national brands, regional makers and unbranded goods side by side. That mix is the market’s strength: you can compare ten LED panels in an hour. It also means you do the checking. Fakes can turn up anywhere, in any city or channel, so make it a habit to verify the mark on every new brand before you pay.

Three things to plan for. One or two pieces: many counters sell by the box or packet. Specification help: a busy counter may not have time to check whether a 6 A switch suits your geyser, so bring a list with ratings. After-sales: warranty claims go through the shop that sold to you, so keep your bill.

Take a written list with ratings, not just names: “20 A 1-way switch, 1M, white, 40 pieces” gets you the right box faster than “AC switch”.

How wholesale buying works: box quantities

Wholesale electrical goods are packed and priced by the box. Our own catalogue prints a PKG. per box column against every code, and it varies by item: small 1-module switches come in larger boxes, MCBs and LED fittings in smaller ones.

How many pieces come in one box: examples from our catalogue

VIZA V000 6 A 1-way switch30
KEMPS K101 10AX 1-way switch20
VIYONA 101 6 A 1-way switch20
VIYONA 401 SP MCB, 6–32 A12
VIYONA 1065 9 W LED lamp10
VIYONA 411 DP MCB, 6–32 A6

Figures are the “PKG. per box” column of our printed catalogue. Bars to scale against 30 pieces. We sell in full boxes only, so a box is the smallest quantity you can order from us.

So when you plan a 2BHK or a shop fit-out, round each line up to full boxes. If you need 26 VIZA V000 6 A 1-way switches, that is one box of 30; the four spares are useful for the next repair. A list that says “7 DP MCBs” becomes two boxes of 6 for the 411, so it can pay to check whether the job really needs seven.

We sell in full boxes only, never single pieces, and we do not sell online. A dealer may split a box for you; that is between you and the dealer.

A sealed box with one batch label is easier to return or claim on than a handful of loose pieces counted out at the counter.

MRP, dealer rate and the price you actually pay

Every retail-packed electrical product carries an MRP, declared inclusive of all taxes. The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 define the retail sale price as the maximum price at which the packaged commodity may be sold to the consumer. It is a ceiling, not the price.

Between maker and buyer sits the dealer rate, the price at which a distributor or dealer buys. Dealer rates are not published; they vary by region, volume and scheme. What you pay at a wholesale counter is usually somewhere below MRP, and how far below depends on quantity, brand, payment terms and how well the shop knows you.

What one full box is worth at MRP

Box of 6 × VIYONA 411 DP MCB₹2,100
Box of 12 × VIYONA 401 SP MCB₹1,740
Box of 30 × VIZA V000 switch₹1,350
Box of 20 × KEMPS K101 switch₹1,300
Box of 10 × VIYONA 1065 LED lamp₹700
Box of 20 × VIYONA 101 switch₹440

Worked arithmetic: catalogue MRP × pieces per box (411 at MRP ₹350, 401 at ₹145, V000 at ₹45, K101 white at ₹65, 1065 at ₹70, 101 at ₹22). MRP is the ceiling; what you actually pay a dealer is usually agreed below it. Bars to scale against ₹2,100.

Use the MRP to sanity-check a quote. If a box of 401 single pole MCBs is offered far below the MRP ₹145 each, ask why. A price that seems too good can mean old stock, a fake, or a different, lower-rated product in similar packaging. Our full MRP list is in the e-catalogue, and the modular switch board price guide shows what a whole board costs at MRP.

Never pay more than the printed MRP for a packaged product. A sticker that hides the original printed MRP is a reason to ask questions, or to walk away.

GST bills: why you want one, and what it should show

Ask for a GST tax invoice on every wholesale purchase. A proper bill is your proof of purchase for warranty and returns, and if you are a GST-registered contractor or shop, the tax invoice is one of the conditions for claiming input tax credit.

Check four things on the bill before you leave: the seller’s 15-digit GSTIN, the HSN code of each item, the quantity in pieces and boxes, and the brand and code as printed on the box. You can confirm a GSTIN is active on the government GST portal under Search Taxpayer.

HSN codes are printed in our catalogue for each family: 85365020 for switches, 85366910 for sockets, 85362030 for MCBs and MCB boxes, and 94051090 for LED panels, downlights and surface lights. If an invoice puts a switch under a code that does not match, ask the shop to correct it.

A kachcha chit with no GSTIN is not a tax invoice. Keep the real bill with the box label until the warranty period is over.

Checking ISI marks and spotting fakes before you pay

BIS-certified electrical goods carry a mark you can check. Certified switches and MCBs carry the ISI mark with an IS number and a licence number written CM/L- followed by digits. Registered LED lamps, panels and drivers carry the Standard Mark with an R-number.

You can check either number on the spot. BIS’s free BIS CARE app has a Verify Licence Details option for CM/L numbers and a Verify R-No under CRS option for R-numbers. You can also use the licence search on the BIS website. Type the number from the box; the app shows whose licence it is and what it covers. If the name that comes back is not the brand on the box, do not buy.

Here are our own numbers, so you can try it: IS 3854 CM/L-7567794 for switches, IS/IEC 60898-1 CM/L-2544151 for MCBs, IS 16102 R-71026514 for LED lamps, IS 10322 R-71026476 for LED downlights and panels, and IS 15885 R-71026310 for LED drivers.

Other warning signs: an ISI mark with no CM/L number, smudged or uneven printing, a box much lighter than the same item elsewhere, and loose pieces with no box at all. Our guide to spotting a fake ISI mark shows each one with photos.

A fake MCB may not trip on a short circuit. That is the one item on your list where a low price is never worth the saving.

Buying LED lights in bulk: what to check

Lohar Chawl is also where much of Mumbai goes for LED lights, and bulk LED buying has its own traps. Before you order 40 panels for an office, check five things.

Watts and lumens: two 15 W panels can give very different light. Compare lumens where the box prints them; our lumens vs watts guide explains why. Colour: buy every fitting for one room in the same colour temperature and ideally from one batch, or the ceiling will look patchy. Driver: the driver usually fails before the LEDs do, so check that it carries its own R-number under IS 15885; our LED driver guide covers why. Mark: an R-number you have verified in the BIS CARE app. Warranty: in writing, against your bill.

For a sense of MRP, our VIYONA 1065 9 W LED lamp is MRP ₹70, the 1033 15 W super slim panel is MRP ₹420, and the 1087 50 W flood light is MRP ₹1,450. The full range is on our LED lights page.

Switch on one fitting from each box at the counter, or ask for a sample first, and check that every box prints the same colour temperature.

Buying switches and MCBs in bulk: match ratings, not just prices

Most wholesale mistakes with switches are rating mistakes. Lights and fans take 6 A or 10 A switches. A geyser, AC or other heavy load needs a 20 A or higher switch on a matching socket and circuit. Our switch range by rating lists each step.

For modular boards, standardise one range across the whole flat or building, so switches, sockets and plates all fit together and spares match later. Our modular plates come from 1M upwards and work with all major modular switch systems; the plate size calculator tells you which size each board needs.

For MCBs, remember what the breaker is for: it protects the wire. Under IS/IEC 60898-1 an MCB carries its rated current indefinitely and trips on sustained overload above it or on a short circuit. So the MCB rating must not exceed what the wire can carry. Common Indian practice is 1.5 sq mm wire for lights and fans on 6 to 10 A, 2.5 sq mm for 16 A sockets, and 4 sq mm for 20 to 25 A circuits such as an AC or geyser. Never put a 16 A socket circuit on a 20 A MCB with 1.5 sq mm wire. The MCB size calculation guide has worked examples.

Fixed wiring, MCBs and DB work belong to a licensed electrician. Switch off at the MCB before anyone opens a board.

Market shop or manufacturer: which route suits you?

A market counter wins on choice and same-day pickup: many brands, side by side, and you can carry the boxes home. It suits a small job, a repair, or a buyer who wants to compare.

Buying from a manufacturer, directly or through its appointed dealer, wins on consistency and paperwork. For a building project or a shop that re-orders the same items every month, that matters more. From us you can ask for test reports before you order, plan around full boxes with known quantities, and rely on a 5 to 10 year warranty depending on the product, 5 years on modular plates. Returns are accepted within 15 days in the same condition.

A one-page checklist for your wholesale trip

Print this, or keep it on your phone, before you head to Kalbadevi.

Before you go: a written list with rating, module size, colour and quantity for each line, rounded up to full boxes; MRPs from the maker’s catalogue for a quick check; the BIS CARE app installed.

At the counter: verify one CM/L or R-number per brand; look for missing licence numbers and stickers hiding the MRP; test one LED from each box; check the box label matches the bill.

Before you pay: a GST tax invoice with the seller’s GSTIN, HSN codes and quantities; the warranty terms in writing; the return window confirmed.

Back on site: keep bills with the box labels; hand MCB and DB work to a licensed electrician.

Not sure of a code, box quantity or MRP? Send us the code on WhatsApp or through the enquiry form and we will confirm it before you buy.

FAQs

Which is the biggest electrical wholesale market in Mumbai?
Lohar Chawl in Kalbadevi, South Mumbai, beside Crawford Market, is widely described as Mumbai’s largest wholesale market for electrical goods and lighting. Shops there sell switches, sockets, MCBs, wire, LED lights and fans, mostly by the box.
Which station is nearest to Lohar Chawl?
Marine Lines on the Western line and Masjid on the Central and Harbour lines are the nearest local stations. From either, it is a short walk or cab ride; Crawford Market is the landmark to head for.
Is there an LED light wholesale market in Mumbai?
Yes. Lohar Chawl is also Mumbai’s main market for LED and decorative lights. When buying LEDs in bulk, check the R-number on the BIS CARE app, buy one colour temperature per room, and test a fitting from each box.
Can I buy single pieces at a wholesale market?
Sometimes, but many counters sell by the box or packet, and prices are better per box. We sell in full boxes only, for example 30 VIZA V000 switches or 12 VIYONA 401 MCBs per box.
How do I check if an ISI mark is genuine?
Enter the CM/L licence number printed with the ISI mark into the free BIS CARE app under Verify Licence Details. It shows the licence holder; if it does not match the brand on the box, do not buy. For LED lamps, check the R-number the same way.
Can I buy directly from Vinayak Electricals instead of the market?
Yes, in full boxes: through one of our dealers, by calling us, or by visiting our works in Marol, Andheri East. We do not sell online. Test reports are available on request before an order.
