10A MCB for a Room Circuit: Load, Wire and Every Code We Make

10 Amp MCB: Load in Watts, Wire Size, Uses and Price
A 10 amp MCB can carry up to about 2,300 W continuously on a 230 V supply. It is the breaker for a room circuit, lights and a fan plus 6A sockets for a TV, laptop and chargers, wired in 1.5 sq mm. We make 10A breakers in single pole from ₹145 MRP and in double pole from ₹300, in every MCB range in our catalogue except the KEMPS double pole.

Key takeaways

  • A 10A MCB carries 10 A × 230 V = 2,300 W; plan for about 1,840 W steady.
  • It suits a room circuit: lights, fan and 6A sockets. Not a geyser, AC or heater.
  • Pair it with 1.5 sq mm wire (13 A in conduit, by our catalogue).
  • In double pole, 10A comes as VIYONA 134 ₹300 up to VIZA V1302 ₹543.
  • Single pole 10A: VIYONA 401 ₹145 up to KEMPS K625 ₹332.

What is a 10 amp MCB?

A 10 amp MCB is a miniature circuit breaker rated to carry 10 amperes continuously; it trips on sustained overload well above that, and at once on a short circuit. In a home it is the breaker for a room circuit that mixes lights and fans with small 6A sockets: the bedroom with a TV and a phone charger, the living room lamp and the Wi-Fi router, a study table with a laptop.

It sits one step above the 6A lighting breaker and one step below the 16A breaker used for power sockets. That middle position makes it the most common rating in many older flats, and also the one most often asked to carry something it was never meant for. We make 10A breakers in every single pole range in our catalogue, at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai.

What a 10A circuit typically feeds

10 amp MCB load capacity in watts

On a 230 V supply a 10A MCB carries 10 A × 230 V = 2,300 W, the load it can carry continuously. For steady planning, keep the circuit near 80% of that, which is 8 A or about 1,840 W.

That figure is the reason a 10A circuit can take a short-lived heavy load. An iron at about 1,000 W, used for twenty minutes on top of the lights, fan and TV, comes to roughly 1,330 W and stays well inside it. A room heater of 2,000 W plugged in alongside the same loads takes the circuit to its full rating with no margin; add anything more and the breaker will trip, which is exactly what it is for.

An MCB does not trip the instant the current passes 10 A. Under IS/IEC 60898-1 it does not trip below 1.13 times its rating (11.3 A) and must trip within an hour above 1.45 times (14.5 A), so a small overload can run a long time, so a circuit that sits slightly over its rating gets hot long before it trips.

For the formula at every rating, see our MCB size calculation guide.

What can a 10A MCB run?

A 10A circuit is the room circuit. Typical steady draws for what usually sits on it:

  • Lights and fans: a few hundred watts per room
  • TV + set-top box: about 100 to 200 W
  • Laptop or desktop: 60 to 300 W
  • Water purifier: tens of watts
  • Iron ~1,000 W: short use only

A refrigerator draws only 100 to 250 W running, but its compressor pulls a short burst at start. A fridge is often put on its own socket and breaker for that reason, and our fridge and washing machine guide explains why it should not share an extension board.

A 10A MCB is not the breaker for a geyser, an AC or a cooking appliance. Those draw 1,500 W to over 2,000 W for long periods and get their own 16A, 20A or 25A circuit.

Which wire goes with a 10A MCB?

The natural pair is 1.5 sq mm copper house wire. Our catalogue rates it at 13 A for two cables in conduit and 16 A clipped to a surface, comfortably above the 10A breaker. If several circuits share one conduit, the wire’s rating falls, so keep the number of circuits per conduit small.

1.0 sq mm is rated 11 A in conduit by the same table. It is above 10 A only just, and 1.5 sq mm is the minimum we recommend for fixed house wiring, so do not use 1.0 sq mm behind a 10A breaker. Single-core house wire must run in conduit or casing, never clipped bare to a wall.

The wire we sell is made for us by a partner. A 90 m coil of 1.5 sq mm (code 652) is ₹2,740 (catalogue rate) and a 45 m coil is ₹1,450. Sizes and coils are on our house wire price list; our copper vs aluminium guide explains why homes use copper.

Where the double pole range starts

10A is the lowest rating in which every one of our double pole Tiny Trips (VIZA V402, V1302) and VIYONA 134 is available; VIYONA 411 and 177 go down to 6A, and the KEMPS double pole starts at 20A. A DP MCB breaks phase and neutral together, and it is used as the cut-off for a whole flat, a shop, or a point you want to isolate completely. The double pole codes that come in 10A:

Printed MRPs from our current catalogue. Each code covers a span of ratings (10A to 32A, or 6A to 32A for 411 and 177) at one price. Bars to scale.

For the distribution board the VIYONA 411 is part of our 10 kA VIYONA range. Our SP vs DP MCB guide explains when the second pole is worth paying for.

Our 10A single pole MCBs and MRPs

In single pole, a 10A breaker is available in all five of our ranges:

  • VIYONA 401: 6A to 32A, 10 kA, for the DB, ₹145, 12 per box
  • VIYONA 133: 6A to 32A, ₹150, 10 per box
  • VIZA V401: 1 module Tiny Trip, 6A to 32A, ₹230, 12 per box
  • VIZA V1301: Tiny Trip, 6A to 32A, ₹281, 12 per box
  • KEMPS K225: Tiny Trip, 10A to 32A, ₹295 white, ₹332 for K625 grey

10A is the lowest rating in the KEMPS Tiny Trip, so a KEMPS board can take a breaker only from this rating up. The KEMPS and VIZA Tiny Trips are covered on our Tiny Trip MCB page.

For a distribution board, VIYONA 401 at ₹145 is the lowest-priced 10A breaker we make, and the only single pole one with a printed 10 kA rating.

10A or 16A for a room circuit?

The question is what will be plugged in. A room with only 6A sockets for chargers, a TV and a lamp is well served by 10A on 1.5 sq mm wire. A room with a 16A socket for an iron, a heater, a vacuum cleaner or a portable AC needs a 16A breaker and 2.5 sq mm wire behind it.

What you must not do is fit a 16A socket on a 10A circuit and hope. The socket invites a 2,000 W appliance, the breaker trips, and the next person to look at it swaps in a 16A breaker on 1.5 sq mm wire. That is how a safe circuit becomes an unsafe one. Our 6A vs 16A socket guide and the 16 amp MCB page cover the heavier circuit.

1.5 sq mm wire is rated 13 A in conduit by our catalogue. A 16A breaker on it will let the wire run hot without tripping.

Mistakes people make at 10A

Ten amps is close enough to the heavy loads that people stretch it. The mistakes we hear about most:

  • Heater on a room circuit: lights, TV and a 2,000 W heater take it to its full 2,300 W with no margin.
  • 1.0 sq mm behind 10A: 11 A on paper, below 10 A once several circuits share a conduit.
  • One 10A for the whole flat: an old single-breaker flat trips every time two things run.
  • Fridge on the lighting circuit: its start burst dims lights and can trip a small breaker.

If a 10A breaker trips repeatedly, the cause is usually load, a failing appliance or a loose joint, in that order. Our MCB tripping guide walks through the safe checks before anything is replaced.

10 amp MCB price and boxes

At MRP, a 10A single pole breaker from us costs ₹145 (VIYONA 401) to ₹332 (KEMPS K625 grey), and a 10A double pole breaker ₹300 (VIYONA 134) to ₹543 (VIZA V1302).

We sell in full boxes only. A box of six VIYONA 411 double pole breakers is ₹2,100 at MRP; a box of ten VIZA V402 Tiny Trips is ₹4,950. Homeowners buy single breakers from a dealer who has opened the box. Every breaker and box we make is priced in our MCB price list, and the box sizes they fit are in our SPN MCB box guide.

A 10A breaker at the switch board

A 10A Tiny Trip fitted in a modular plate gives one point its own trip and a clear OFF position. At this rating it suits a home office desk with a computer and a printer, a water purifier and chimney board in the kitchen, or a shop counter with a billing machine and a display light.

The VIZA V401 takes one module at ₹230; the KEMPS K225 at ₹295 matches a KEMPS plate. For a double pole cut at the board, the VIZA V402 takes two modules at ₹495. The breaker at the board should be rated below the DB breaker feeding it, or the DB breaker may trip first, so a 10A Tiny Trip normally sits on a 16A circuit.

Our MCB in switch board guide shows how the two breakers share the job.

A Tiny Trip at the board does not replace the DB breaker. The cable from the DB to the board still needs protecting at the DB end.

10A circuits in a shop or small office

Shops and small offices use more 10A circuits than homes, because most of their load is lighting, computers and display equipment rather than heating. A typical small shop might run one 10A circuit for the ceiling lights and sign board, one for the counter and its computer, and a separate 16A or 20A breaker for the AC.

Splitting the load this way means a fault at the counter does not darken the shop floor. Our shop electrical points guide lays out a full shop board, and a double pole main at the incomer lets the owner cut the whole shop at closing time.
