20A MCB for ACs and Induction Hobs: Load, Wire and the Right Point
Key takeaways
- A 20A MCB carries 20 A × 230 V = 4,600 W; plan for about 3,680 W steady.
- It suits a 2 ton split AC, an induction hob or a large geyser on its own circuit.
- In conduit use 4 sq mm wire (24 A); 2.5 sq mm is rated only 18 A there.
- Connect through a 32A DP switch or DP Tiny Trip, not a 16A plug and socket.
- 20A SP: VIYONA 401 ₹145 to KEMPS K625 ₹332. DP: VIYONA 134 ₹300 to KEMPS K626 ₹698.
What is a 20 amp MCB?
A 20 amp MCB is a miniature circuit breaker rated to carry 20 amperes continuously. In a home it is the breaker for the biggest single appliances on a single phase supply: a 2 ton split AC, an induction hob, a large instant or storage geyser, or a kitchen circuit that runs several cooking appliances at once.
It is one step above the 16A power circuit, and the step is not just in the breaker. At 20A the wire usually goes up to 4 sq mm in conduit, and the 16A socket that worked on a 16A circuit is no longer rated for the breaker behind it. We make 20A breakers in every MCB range in our catalogue, single and double pole, at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai.
20 amp MCB load capacity in watts
At 230 V a 20A MCB carries 20 A × 230 V = 4,600 W. On the 80% planning rule that is 16 A or about 3,680 W of steady load, which is a 16A breaker’s full rating with no headroom. That overlap is the whole point of the 20A step: it carries steadily what would push a 16A circuit to its limit.
Typical loads where 20A comes into play, from figures printed on common products:
- 2 ton split AC: often 2,000 to 2,800 W running
- Induction hob: 2,000 W and up
- Instant geyser: 3,000 W and up
- Kitchen counter circuit: kettle, microwave and mixer together
Air conditioners draw a short burst when the compressor starts. A unit that trips its breaker only at start-up may need a different trip curve, not a bigger rating. Our B curve vs C curve guide explains the difference.
The guide is B curve vs C curve MCB; for tonnage-by-tonnage ratings see MCB for AC.

Which wire goes with a 20A MCB?
The wire must carry at least 20 A for as long as the breaker allows it. Our catalogue’s wire table, for two cables of a single phase circuit:
- 2.5 sq mm: 18 A in conduit, 22 A clipped to a surface
- 4 sq mm: 24 A in conduit, 29 A clipped
- 6 sq mm: 31 A in conduit, 32 A clipped
So 20A in conduit means 4 sq mm. 2.5 sq mm only works at 20A where it is clipped in open air, which in Indian flats is rare: almost all home wiring is concealed in conduit.
The wire we sell is made for us by a partner. A 4 sq mm coil (code 654) is ₹3,272 for 45 m and ₹6,544 for 90 m; our house wire price list has every size.
A 20A breaker on 2.5 sq mm in conduit lets the wire carry 2 A more than it is rated for, all day, without tripping. Either fit 16A or pull 4 sq mm.
The usual home use for 20A, one breaker per AC.
20 A at 230 V; plan for about 3,680 W steady.
Rated 24 A in conduit; 2.5 sq mm falls short at 18 A.
Use a 32A DP switch or a DP Tiny Trip at the unit.
The socket problem at 20A
A standard Indian 16A socket is rated 16 A. Put it on a 20A circuit and the breaker will let 20 A through contacts made for 16 A. That is why a 20A circuit for an AC or a hob is usually not ended in a plug and socket at all. The appliance is connected through a switch or a breaker rated at or above the circuit:
- 32A DP switch: VIZA V225 with indicator ₹295, VIYONA 176 concealed ₹205
- 16A socket + 20A switch: only on a 16A circuit, never on 20A
- DP Tiny Trip: VIZA V402 ₹495, a breaker and isolator in one
The DP switch page explains the 32A switch, and our AC socket guide covers what to fit where an installer insists on a plug.
Our 20A MCBs: codes and MRPs
Every single pole range we make comes in 20A, at the same price as its other ratings:
Single pole MCBs we make that come in 20A
Printed MRPs from our current catalogue; each code covers a span of ratings including 20A. Bars to scale.
In double pole, 20A comes as VIYONA 411 for the DB at ₹350, VIYONA 134 at ₹300, VIZA V402 at ₹495, VIZA V1302 at ₹543, and the KEMPS K226 at ₹625 (K626 grey ₹698), whose printed ratings include 20A and 25A. The DB breakers are on our VIYONA 10 kA MCB page.
SP or DP for a 20A circuit?
In the DB, a single pole 20A breaker on the phase is normal for an AC circuit. A double pole breaker breaks phase and neutral together, which matters where the neutral cannot be trusted: older buildings with shared neutrals, or a supply where phase and neutral have been swapped somewhere upstream.
At the appliance, the isolating device is best double pole. An AC technician switching off a DP switch or a DP Tiny Trip knows both conductors are cut before opening the unit.
The price step is modest in the DB: ₹145 for a VIYONA 401 against ₹350 for a 411. Our SP vs DP MCB guide covers the choice in full.
A common, sensible build: single pole 20A in the DB, plus a 32A DP switch with indicator beside the indoor unit.
20A or 25A for a big load?
Step up to 25A only when the appliance’s own rating calls for it: a nameplate current above about 16 A steady, or the installer’s manual. A 25A circuit needs heavier wire again, and in conduit 4 sq mm (24 A by our table) falls just short of it.
For most 2 ton split ACs and household induction hobs, 20A on 4 sq mm is the right size. The 25 amp MCB page explains when the next step is needed, and the 16 amp MCB page covers the circuit below.
Do not choose 25A because 20A “sometimes trips”. Find out why it trips first: a failing compressor, a loose terminal or a shared circuit are more common than an undersized breaker.
Mistakes people make at 20A
The 20A circuit is where single phase home wiring meets its heaviest loads, and the mistakes cluster around the wire and the socket:
- 2.5 sq mm in conduit: rated 18 A, behind a 20 A breaker.
- 16A plug on a 20A circuit: the socket is the weakest part.
- Two ACs on one 20A: two 1.5 ton units together come close to a 20A circuit’s full load.
- Sizing by tonnage alone: read the amps on the outdoor unit.
- A 20A breaker on a 16A switch: every part of the circuit, switch included, must be rated for 20 A or more.
- Joints in the AC run: a twisted joint in 4 sq mm wire behind the false ceiling is where the heat collects. Use one continuous length from DB to unit.
Each AC should have its own circuit. If a flat has three ACs, it needs three AC breakers, and the DB and main incomer have to be sized for that. Our electrical load calculation guide adds them up.
20A at the main board of a small flat
In a small 1RK or 1BHK with no AC, a 20A double pole breaker is sometimes used as the main switch, cutting phase and neutral for the whole flat. That is a judgement call based on the sanctioned load on the electricity bill and the size of the service cable from the meter, which the electricity company sets.
For a 2BHK with ACs, the main is usually a 32A, 40A or 63A double pole breaker. A double pole isolator serves as the main only where the cable from the meter is already protected upstream and every circuit has its own MCB. Our 32 amp MCB page and isolator switch guide cover the main switch; VIYONA 412 is a 40A double pole breaker at ₹435.
The main breaker must not be larger than the service cable and meter allow. Ask your electricity company or licensed electrician before choosing it.
20 amp MCB price and boxes
A 20A single pole breaker from us is ₹145 (VIYONA 401, 12 per box) to ₹332 (KEMPS K625). A 20A double pole is ₹300 (VIYONA 134) to ₹698 (KEMPS K626).
A typical AC point at MRP, a VIYONA 401 20A breaker in the DB and a VIZA V225 32A DP switch with indicator at the unit, comes to ₹440 in parts, before wire. We sell in full boxes only, through dealers. Everything is priced in our MCB price list.
Hob, geyser or pump: does it need 20A?
Work from the appliance’s rated watts, divided by 230 V, then add headroom. Three examples using typical nameplate figures:
- Two-zone induction hob rated 3,500 W draws about 15.2 A. With headroom, that is a 20A circuit.
- Instant geyser rated 3,000 W draws about 13 A. A 16A circuit can carry it, but a 20A circuit on 4 sq mm leaves the kind of margin a heater running every morning appreciates.
- 1 HP water pump draws roughly 1,000 W from the supply, about 6 to 7 A running; read the nameplate current. It does not need 20A at all; its start current is handled by the trip curve, and a smaller breaker protects it better.
That last case is a common over-sizing: a big breaker on a small motor will not trip when the pump jams. Our MCB for water pump guide sizes pumps properly.
