32A MCB as the Main Switch: Load, Single vs Double Pole, Price

32 Amp MCB: Load in Watts, SP vs DP, Wire Size and Price
A 32 amp MCB can carry up to 7,360 W continuously at 230 V. At home it is usually the main switch of a flat, or the breaker for one very large load such as an EV charger. As a main it should be double pole, so OFF cuts phase and neutral. We make 32A breakers from ₹145 MRP single pole and ₹300 double pole.

Key takeaways

  • A 32A MCB carries 32 A × 230 V = 7,360 W; plan for about 5,900 W steady.
  • Usual jobs: main switch of a 1BHK or 2BHK, a sub-main, or a 7 kW EV charger.
  • As a main, use double pole: VIYONA 411 at ₹350 cuts phase and neutral together.
  • A 32A DP switch (from ₹195) does not trip; it is not an MCB.
  • Wire: 6 sq mm only where clipped in open air (32 A); in conduit a 32A circuit needs larger cable than 6 sq mm (31 A in our table).

What is a 32 amp MCB?

A 32 amp MCB is a miniature circuit breaker rated to carry 32 amperes continuously, the highest rating in the 6A to 32A span that most of our breaker codes cover. At home it does two quite different jobs: the main switch of a flat, where it protects the cable from the meter, and the breaker for one very large load such as a 7 kW EV charger or a big commercial heater.

For the main switch, the question is less about the rating than about the poles: single pole or double pole. The drawing shows why the answer is almost always double pole. We make 32A breakers in both, at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai.

32 amp MCB load capacity in watts

At 230 V a 32A MCB carries 32 A × 230 V = 7,360 W. On the 80% planning rule that is 25.6 A or about 5,900 W of steady load.

As a main switch, 7,360 W is the whole flat at once, not any one appliance. A 2BHK with lights, sockets, a fridge, two geysers and one or two ACs can reach that on a hot evening with the geysers on, which is why the main is chosen from the sanctioned load on the electricity bill, not from the sum of every breaker.

As a single appliance circuit, 32A is used for a 7 kW EV charger (about 30 A, above the 80% planning figure, so follow the charger maker’s breaker rating) or a large commercial heater. Our EV charging point guide covers the charger circuit.

Add up the outgoing breakers in a DB and the total is always far above the main. That is normal: not every circuit runs at full load at once. The main is sized to the supply, the outgoing breakers to their wires.

SP or DP: which 32A MCB to buy?

A single pole breaker opens the phase only. A double pole breaker opens phase and neutral together, from one lever. For a 32A breaker the job usually decides it:

  • Main switch of a flat: double pole, so OFF really means off.
  • Sub-main to a second board: double pole.
  • EV charger, single circuit: double pole is the safer choice.
  • Outgoing circuit in a DB: single pole is normal.

The neutral matters more than people think. In older buildings neutrals are sometimes shared or swapped upstream, and a single pole main leaves a neutral connected that someone may assume is dead.

Our single pole vs double pole MCB guide covers the choice in more depth.

Main switch

The usual job for 32A: the incomer of a flat’s DB.

Not a DP switch

A 32A DP switch carries 32 A but never trips.

Our 32A MCBs: codes and MRPs

32A is the top of the span on most of our codes, so the price is the same as at 6A or 16A. In single pole: VIYONA 401 ₹145, VIYONA 133 ₹150, VIZA V401 ₹230, VIZA V1301 ₹281, KEMPS K225 ₹295. In double pole: VIYONA 134 ₹300, VIYONA 411 ₹350, VIYONA 177 surface ₹350, VIZA V402 ₹495, VIZA V1302 ₹543.

Printed MRPs from our current catalogue. 401, 402, 411 and 412 are VIYONA 10 kA breakers; 176 is a 32A DP switch, which does not trip. Bars to scale.

The VIYONA range is made to IS/IEC 60898-1 under BIS licence CM/L-2544151; see the VIYONA 10 kA MCB page.

A 32A DP switch is not a 32A MCB

The chart above has a trap in it. A 32A DP switch such as VIYONA 176 (₹205) or VIZA V225 with indicator (₹295) looks like a cheaper double pole breaker. It is not. A DP switch is a manual on-off switch rated to carry 32 A. It never trips on overload or short circuit.

A DP switch is the right part beside a geyser or AC, as a local isolator on a circuit already protected by an MCB in the DB. It is not a protective device: as a main it is acceptable only where the cable from the meter is already protected upstream (the electricity company’s cut-out or a breaker at the meter) and every circuit below has its own MCB. Where the main itself must protect that cable, use a DP MCB.

Our DP switch guide covers where it belongs, and isolator vs MCB explains the same distinction for DIN rail isolators.

Never use a DP switch or an isolator as the only protection on a circuit. Something upstream must be able to trip.

Which wire goes with a 32A MCB?

Our catalogue’s wire table rates 6 sq mm at 31 A for two cables in conduit and 32 A clipped to a surface. 4 sq mm, at 24 A in conduit, is far too small for 32A.

6 sq mm is the largest size in that table, and in conduit it sits 1 A under the breaker. The breaker must not be rated above the wire, so in conduit a 32A circuit needs 10 sq mm, which is not in our wire range, or the circuit should be protected at 25A on 6 sq mm. Clipped in free air, 6 sq mm is rated 32 A and suits a 32A breaker. For a circuit that carries close to 32A for hours, such as an EV charger, the electrician sizes the cable for that run.

The wire we sell is made for us by a partner. 6 sq mm (code 655) is ₹5,085 for 45 m and ₹9,970 for 90 m (catalogue rate); see our house wire price list.

Long runs drop voltage as well as heating the wire. A 32A circuit to a building at the far end of a plot needs its cable sized for distance, not just current.

32A or 40A for the main?

A 1BHK or a modest 2BHK with one AC is commonly served by a 32A double pole main. A flat with three ACs and two geysers often needs 40A, which in our range is a separate code: VIYONA 402 single pole at ₹185 and 412 double pole at ₹435. Above that is 63A: 403 at ₹215 and 413 at ₹530.

The ceiling is set by the electricity company: the sanctioned load and the size of the service cable and meter. A main breaker larger than the supply allows does not give you more power. It only stops protecting the cable from the meter.

A double pole isolator, such as our VIYONA 442 (40A, ₹230), only switches. It is not a cheaper substitute for a DP MCB main: it belongs as the main only where the cable from the meter is already protected upstream, by the electricity company’s cut-out or a breaker at the meter. The isolator switch page explains the arrangement.

Where the meter cable is protected upstream, many boards use a double pole isolator as the main and an RCCB below it, with every outgoing circuit on its own MCB. That gives a clear OFF, leakage protection and overload protection in three parts.

Mistakes people make at 32A

At 32A the mistakes are expensive because they sit at the top of the board:

  • Single pole main: OFF leaves the neutral connected to the flat.
  • DP switch as the main: it carries 32 A but never trips.
  • 4 sq mm behind 32A: rated 24 A in conduit by our table.
  • 32A outgoing on a 32A main: with equal ratings, either may trip first.
  • EV charger on a 16A socket: a 7 kW charger needs its own 32A circuit.

If a 32A main trips in the evening, the flat is using more than the main allows. Our electrical load calculation guide shows how to add up the real load, and the fix is usually spreading heavy loads in time, or raising the sanctioned load, never a larger breaker on the same cable.

Where the 32A main sits in the DB

A double pole main takes two ways in the box, at the incoming end. Below it a typical flat DB has an RCCB, then the outgoing breakers, one way each for single pole. Size the box as outgoing circuits + 2 for the DP main + 2 for the RCCB + 2 spare, and check whether the box’s printed way count includes the main. A 2BHK with a DP main, an RCCB and ten outgoing circuits therefore needs 16 ways.

Our SPN MCB box page covers the white line boxes from 2–4 way (₹380) to 16–18 way (₹950), and the double door MCB box page covers the double door range from 4 way (₹750) to 16 way (₹1,410).

Count the RCCB when sizing the box. It is the device most often forgotten when the box is ordered, and the one that protects people.

32 amp MCB price and boxes

A 32A single pole breaker from us is ₹145 (VIYONA 401, 12 per box) to ₹332 (KEMPS K625 grey). A 32A double pole is ₹300 (VIYONA 134) to ₹543 (VIZA V1302); for the DB main, the VIYONA 411 at ₹350 is the usual choice, 6 per box.

A box of six 411s is ₹2,100 at MRP. We sell in full boxes only, through dealers. Every breaker we make is priced in our MCB price list.

32A for an EV charger or a workshop

The one single load at home that genuinely needs 32A is a 7 kW wall charger for an electric car, which draws about 30 A for hours at a time. That is the hardest duty a home circuit sees: near full rating, continuously, often overnight in a warm garage.

Such a circuit gets its own double pole breaker in the DB, its own cable sized by the electrician for the run (in conduit, larger than 6 sq mm for 32A), and the leakage protection the charger maker specifies. A slower charger of about 3.3 kW draws around 14 A for hours, close to a 16A circuit’s full rating; follow the charger maker’s breaker rating; the 16 amp MCB page covers that size.

In a small workshop or a tailoring unit on single phase, a 32A circuit may feed a sub-board with several machines. The same rules apply as for a sub-main: double pole feeder, cable rated for 32A, outgoing breakers below 32A.

Check the sanctioned load before adding a 32A charger circuit. On many single phase connections the charger alone uses most of what the meter allows.

FAQs

How many watts can a 32 amp MCB handle?
About 7,360 W at 230 V (32 A × 230 V). Plan for roughly 5,900 W of steady load.
Should a 32A main MCB be single pole or double pole?
Double pole, so switching it off cuts phase and neutral to the whole flat. Our VIYONA 411 is ₹350 MRP.
What wire size for a 32 amp MCB?
In conduit, larger than 6 sq mm: our catalogue rates 6 sq mm at 31 A in conduit and 32 A clipped, so 6 sq mm suits a 32A breaker only where clipped in open air. In conduit, use 10 sq mm or protect the 6 sq mm circuit at 25A.
What is the price of a 32A MCB?
Single pole from ₹145 MRP (VIYONA 401); double pole from ₹300 (VIYONA 134) and ₹350 (VIYONA 411) for the DB.
Is a 32A DP switch the same as a 32A DP MCB?
No. A DP switch is a manual switch and never trips. A DP MCB trips on overload and short circuit.
Can I use a 32A MCB for a 2 ton AC?
Not usually. A 2 ton AC is normally on a 20A circuit; see our 20 amp MCB page. An oversized breaker will not protect the AC’s wire properly.
