A workplace switch board does a different job
A switch board in an office, shop or clinic does the same basic job as one at home: it switches lights and fans and gives you somewhere to plug in. What changes is the load around it. Ten people sit where a family of four would, each with a screen, a charger and a network cable. A pantry runs a water dispenser and a microwave all day. A copier warms up every morning. Someone has to be able to switch off a whole floor at night.
Modular boards suit that work because every point is a separate module in a common frame. A data jack, a USB charger, a key-tag switch and a 16A socket all clip into the same plate, and a failed or outdated module comes out on its own without a new board.

Modular switches for office: what a workplace needs that a home does not
Modular switches for an office need more of four things than a home does: data and communication points at every desk, heavier sockets for shared machines, double-pole isolation for each floor or unit, and one finish that stays the same across every floor. The switches for lights and fans hardly change.
For lights and fans, a 6A or 10AX switch is still the right rating, office or home. The difference is on the socket side. A workstation typically needs two 6A sockets, a USB charger and an RJ45 data jack. A pantry or copier corner needs a 16A point on its own circuit. The main feed to a floor or a shop needs a DP switch or MCB that cuts both live and neutral.
Points at one desk or table in our worked example

Count points from the desk plan, not from the walls. In an office the furniture layout is fixed before the electrician arrives, so every point can go exactly where the cable will be used.

How many sockets and data points does an office desk need?
A typical office workstation is planned with two 6A sockets for the monitor and laptop, one USB charger for phones, and one RJ45 data jack for the office network, with a telephone jack added wherever desk phones are still in use. That is five points per desk, grouped on one board under the desk or on the partition.
From our catalogue, a desk board could take two KEMPS K192 6A 3-pin sockets with shutter (₹110 each), a KEMPS K207 USB charger socket (₹750) and a KEMPS K205 2M RJ45 modem jack with shutter (₹284). Plan one spare module position on every desk board. A second data jack or another USB charger is a module swap later; a bigger box means opening the partition.

Office switch board: telephone, TV and meeting-room points
An office switch board carries points a home rarely needs. Reception and cabins still use desk phones, meeting rooms need a screen, and a waiting area often has a TV. Each of these is a single module in the same plate as the sockets, so the wall stays tidy.
For telephones, KEMPS has the K203 two-line jack with shutter at ₹122 and the K204 four-line double jack at ₹158. VIZA has the V183 RJ11 two-line jack with shutter at ₹98 and the V182 RJ11 four-line jack at ₹134. For a TV, the KEMPS K201 TV socket is ₹102 and the VIZA V184 is ₹83. For a meeting-room screen, the KEMPS K206 HDMI socket (₹1,150) puts the cable end in the wall plate instead of on the floor.

RJ11 and RJ45 are different jacks. RJ11 is for telephone lines; RJ45 is the wider jack for network cable. Check what your IT vendor is running before you order the modules.
Shuttered jacks keep dust out of points that stay unused for months, which is common in hot-desk offices.
16A and 20A points for pantry, printers and copiers
Shared machines are where an office differs most from a home. A pantry may run a microwave, a water dispenser and a refrigerator at the same time, and a large copier is usually on all day. Anything that heats or drives a motor normally goes on a 16A socket with its own switch, on a circuit sized for it.
Our KEMPS K193 6A and 16AX universal socket with shutter is ₹205 and takes both plug sizes. The VIZA V263 16A socket on a porcelain base is ₹160, and the V270 6 and 16A universal socket (2M) is ₹130. To switch these, use a 20A switch: KEMPS K111 20AX 1-way 2M at ₹156, or VIZA V223 20A 1-way with indicator at ₹139, so staff can see from the door that the point is live.
Which rating an office load usually goes on
Bars show an order from heaviest to lightest rating, not measured loads. What decides the rating is the appliance’s own plug and manual, and your electrician sizes the circuit.
Never run a pantry appliance from a 6A socket through an adaptor or a multi-plug. The plug fits, but the load runs through contacts and wiring chosen for less, and it shows up later as heat.

Modular switches for commercial buildings: DP switches and MCBs per floor
In a commercial building each floor, shop or unit is usually given its own distribution board, so one tenant’s fault does not trip the whole building and a floor can be isolated for work. Inside the board, each group of desks, the pantry and every AC typically gets its own MCB.

At the board itself, a DP switch cuts both live and neutral: VIZA V225 32A DP with indicator (2M) at ₹295, or KEMPS K116 32AX DP at ₹360. Key-tag switches for hotel rooms, cabins and guest rooms
A key-tag switch is a double-pole switch that only turns on when a tag is slotted in. Hotels use it so a room’s power goes off when the guest takes the key out; offices use the same idea for cabins, guest rooms and training rooms that sit empty for long stretches.

Order spare tags with the switches. Tags go missing, and a room whose only tag has walked off with a guest is a room with no lights.
Check the circuit Put the key-tag switch on the circuit you want to cut, such as lights and AC, and leave a refrigerator or network rack on a separate feed.
Clinics and shops: call bells, buzzers and indicators
Clinics and shops need signalling that a home does not. A doctor calls the next patient, a shop counter calls the storeroom, and staff need to see at a glance which heavy point is live. These are all modules that fit the same plate as the switches.
For clinics, the VIZA V304 hospital bell indicator is ₹275 and the V302 electric buzzer (2M) is ₹243; KEMPS has the K224 electronic buzzer at ₹230 and the K103 10AX bell push at ₹105. A KEMPS K217 6A red indicator (₹95) shows that a sterilizer or heater point is on.
For a shop, the VIZA V285 10A universal switch-socket combined, with indicator and safety shutter, is ₹180 and suits a counter point. Where a shop runs a water pump, the VIZA V292 25/32A motor starter is ₹530.
A bell push is a momentary switch, not an on-off switch. Order it by name so the electrician does not fit an ordinary switch at the doctor’s desk.
Surface gang boxes for retrofit offices and rented shops
Many offices and shops are fitted out in rented space where the landlord will not allow walls to be chased, or where a partition is too thin for a concealed box. A surface gang box sits on the wall face and takes the same modules and plates as a concealed board.

Office electrical layout: how to plan points per workstation
An office electrical layout is planned desk by desk: mark every workstation on the floor plan, give each one a fixed set of sockets, USB and data points, then add the shared loads such as pantry, printers, AC and signage on their own circuits, and group them on one distribution board per floor or unit.
In practice, most planners start with the same desk kit for every seat, then add reception, meeting room and pantry as separate lists. Keep the server or network rack on a dedicated circuit, and put AC points on their own MCBs. Leave spare ways in the distribution board, because offices add desks faster than homes add rooms.

Do not daisy-chain extension boards under desks to make up for missing points. It is the most common sign that an office layout was planned from the walls rather than from the desks.
One plain finish across every floor
In an office, the switch boards are seen by every visitor on every floor. A single plain finish, the same module range and the same plate size for the same job looks deliberate; three finishes bought from three suppliers in three phases looks like three phases.
