What is an angle holder?
An angle holder is a lamp holder that fixes to a wall and holds the lamp at an angle, tilted out from the wall and down into the room, instead of pointing straight at the floor. It is the wall-mounted partner of the batten holder, which fixes flat to a ceiling.
Because the lamp leans out, it lights the space in front of the wall as well as the wall itself. That is what makes it the usual choice above a mirror, by a door or along a staircase. We make six angle holder codes in our VIYONA range, plus two 2 in 1 holders that work either way.
Where to use an angle holder
Use an angle holder wherever the wiring comes out of a wall and you want an open lamp:
- Above a mirror A dressing area or wash basin outside the bathroom.
- Staircases A wall point on each landing lights the steps below it.
- Covered porch Beside the main door, out of the rain, where a ceiling point is not available; put a 30 mA RCCB on the circuit.
- Shop signboard A row of angle holders tilted at a board indoors or under cover.
- Garage, store, site Cheap, quick wall lighting where looks do not matter.
An angle holder is also the simple answer where the ceiling is out of reach or cannot be chased for wiring, such as under a sloping roof or in an old building with a stone ceiling: the point comes out of the wall instead.
Our holders carry no weather rating, so for outdoor walls with rain on them use a fitting rated for outdoor use, with a 30 mA RCCB on the circuit; our outdoor lights guide covers what to use at a gate or compound wall.

The 2 in 1 angle/batten holder
Our two 2 in 1 angle/batten holders can be fixed either on a wall, as an angle holder, or on a ceiling, as a batten holder. The 219 has an orange body detail and an aluminium ring, at ₹52; the 220 has an aluminium ring and is printed “3-step”, at ₹55.
They cost about twice a basic holder, so they are not the cheapest way to light one known point. They earn their price in two cases: an electrician who wants one code in the van for any job, and a point where the owner has not decided between a wall and a ceiling light. A dealer stocking one box of 2 in 1 covers both requests.
The catalogue does not explain the 220’s “3-step”. Ask us before you rely on it for a particular angle.
2 in 1 or a matched pair: the cost
Is a 2 in 1 worth it? Compare two points, one wall and one ceiling, each way:
One wall point and one ceiling point, at MRP
Our arithmetic from printed MRPs: 201 ₹26 + 202 ₹26; 219 ₹52 each; 220 ₹55 each.
Buying the matched pair costs ₹52 against ₹104 or ₹110 for two 2 in 1 holders. So for a house where every point is known, order angle and batten holders by code; keep the 2 in 1 for stock and for the undecided point. Our batten holder guide lists the ceiling codes.
Ring or plain on a wall
Most of our angle holders are printed with an aluminium ring: the Decent 206, Sumo 213, Royal fancy 217, the square 221 and both 2 in 1 holders. The Deluxe 201 is plain polycarbonate, and the Saathi 211 line does not mention a ring.
On a wall, the lamp hangs at an angle from the holder, so its weight pulls sideways on the mouth rather than straight down; seat it firmly and check it is held square. Our catalogue names the ring but does not describe it, so look at a sample if the ring decides your choice. The cost is small: ₹29 or ₹30 for the ringed Decent and Sumo against ₹26 for the plain Deluxe. The batten holder guide lists the ringed ceiling codes.
Square and fancy angle holders
The 221 square angle holder (₹65) is part of a 5 x 5 square set with the 222 batten holder (₹65) and the 223 ceiling rose (₹54). All share the same square body, so a wall light and a ceiling light in a lobby or passage match exactly.
The Royal fancy 217 (₹38) is the round alternative for a point on show. Its batten partner is the 218. See the square holder set and our fancy lamp holder range.
Placing an angle holder
An angle holder takes its wires from a point in the wall, usually through a round block or a small box set at the right height. A few placement habits help:
- Above a mirror high enough that the lamp is above eye level, so it lights the face rather than glaring into the eyes.
- Stairs on the wall at each landing, tilted down the flight.
- Wet areas keep an open lamp out of reach of splashes; in a bathroom use a fitting rated for damp locations, on a circuit with a 30 mA RCCB.
Our switch board height guide gives typical heights for wall points, and our bulkhead light guide covers our 12W and 20W enclosed fittings; ask us before using one where water reaches it.
Angle holder connection
An angle holder is wired exactly like a batten holder: the switched phase from the wall switch to one terminal and the neutral to the other; on a screw (E27) holder the phase goes to the centre-contact terminal and the neutral to the screw shell. Only the mounting differs.
- Switch off the MCB and prove the wires dead.
- Pass the wires through the base and clamp one under each terminal.
- Fix the base to the block with the lamp mouth pointing down and out.
- Fit the skirt and the lamp, switch on and test.
Our bulb holder connection guide covers each step, and our B22 vs E27 guide helps match the lamp cap to the holder; our catalogue does not print the cap type.
Never switch the neutral. If the switch breaks the neutral instead of the phase, the holder stays live with the lamp off.
Angle holder or a wall light fitting?
An angle holder with a bare lamp is the plainest wall light. Three of our fittings do the same job with a different look, and are worth comparing on price:
- Above a mirror A T5 LED tube fitting (1058, 12W, ₹180) spreads light across the whole mirror instead of from one point.
- Porch or balcony A 12W PVC bulkhead light (1046, ₹330) is an enclosed fitting; ask us before fitting it where rain reaches it.
- Passage wall A 6W concealed surface LED (1006, ₹160) is a compact alternative; ask us how it mounts.
The angle holder with a 9W lamp still costs the least, from ₹96 for holder and lamp together. Choose it where the lamp will be changed by hand and nobody minds seeing it. Our tube light guide and LED price list cover the alternatives.
What a wall light point costs
A wall light point is one of the least costly points in a house. With a switch and a 9W LED lamp at MRP:
One wall light point, at MRP
Our arithmetic from printed MRPs: 101 ₹22, V541 ₹56, 201 ₹26, 213 ₹30, 217 ₹38, 1065 ₹70. Wire, block and labour extra.
The lamp costs more than the holder, and so does any modular switch. Our LED light price list and switch price list have every code.
Box quantities, HSN code and ordering
All our angle holders come 20 to a box, sold in full boxes only. The HSN code printed for lamp holders is 85366110.
A dealer serving electricians can cover most requests with three codes in stock: the plain 201, a ringed holder such as the 213, and a box of 2 in 1 holders for the undecided point. Order angle and batten holders of one pattern together if you want every floor to match.
The printed MRP is the most you should pay; many dealers charge less. For every holder type in one place, see our holder types guide and lamp holder manufacturer page.
