Bell Push Switch: Every Code, Wiring and Price

What is a bell push switch?

A bell push switch is the button beside the main door that rings the bell inside. Unlike a light switch, it is momentary: it makes contact only while it is pressed and springs back the moment it is released, so the bell rings for as long as the visitor holds it and stops when they let go.

On a modular board a bell push is a module like any switch, clipped into a plate in front of a box. We make bell pushes in every one of our ranges, KEMPS, VIZA, VIZA Black and VIYONA, at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai: 1 module and 2 module pushes, pushes with an indicator, pushes combined with a porch light switch, and surface pushes that need no box. Bell push codes in each range

The everyday 1 module bell push, white or standard finish, in each range:

• VIZA Cherry V543 ₹82, Mirchi V533 ₹82, piano V103 ₹82, Royal V143 ₹85, Royal Big Flatty V143A ₹85, Sumo V503 ₹85 and Slim V133 ₹98.
• VIZA Black V1203 ₹90, Mirchi V1217 ₹90, Royal V1226 ₹106, Sumo V1233 ₹106.
• KEMPS 10AX pushes: Peony K103 ₹105, Orchid K143 ₹115, Daisy K123 ₹122, Vinca K163 ₹140; the grey versions (K5xx) cost more.
• VIYONA for conventional boards: Deluxe 103, Nano 107 and Decent 111, each ₹30.

Every VIZA and VIZA Black 1M push is packed 30 per box; KEMPS 1M pushes 20 per box. Match the push to the plate range on the board, because a module clips most securely into a frame of its own range.

Bell push with indicator

A bell push with an indicator has a small lamp that glows, so a visitor can find the push in a dark corridor or at night. It costs a little more than the plain push in each range:

The cheapest is the VIZA piano V112 at ₹82, the same MRP as the plain V103; in Cherry, V545 is ₹93, ₹11 more than the plain V543. Our indicator switch guide explains how the lamp is wired across the push.

How a bell push is wired

A bell push sits in the phase wire between the MCB and the bell. Pressing it completes the circuit; the bell’s other terminal goes to neutral. Nothing else is needed.

The push carries only the bell’s small current, so a 6A or 10A rating is ample. The bell is usually on the lighting circuit. Fit the push at the board line by the door, about 4 ft from the floor, and the bell on a central passage wall where it can be heard from every room. Our switch board height guide gives the heights.

1 module, 2 module or combined with a light switch

Three sizes of bell push suit three kinds of entrance:

• 1 module the standard push, sharing a plate with a porch light switch.
• 2 module a wider push that is easier to find and press: VIZA V203 ₹109, VIZA Royal V153 and Sumo V518 ₹118, VIZA Black Royal V1333 ₹129, KEMPS Peony K114 ₹133.
• Combined, 2 in one a 1 way switch and a bell push side by side on one 2M module: KEMPS K174 ₹209, VIZA Air V529 ₹220, VIZA Black Air V1294 ₹250.

Our wide-rocker Air switch range also has a single wide bell push on a 2M body: VIZA V539 at ₹170, with indicator V540 at ₹175, and VIZA Black V1344 at ₹200. A wide push suits elderly visitors and anyone carrying bags.

Surface and bedside bell pushes

Where there is no switch board to put a module in, VIYONA makes two pushes that mount straight on the wall or hang on a cord:

• VIYONA 185 ₹36 surface bell push: screwed to the wall, for a covered back door or a rented flat, not for an exposed gate pillar.
• VIYONA 182 ₹38 bed bell push: on a cord, so someone in bed can call for help.

The bell the push rings

Any of our pushes works any of our wired bells. VIYONA makes ding dong bells from ₹195 (Boss, 234) to ₹230 (Saathi, 235), the stereo bell at ₹375, and musical bells from ₹235 (classic parrot, 236) to ₹310 (musical aarti tune, 240). See the ding dong bells and musical door bells.

Where to place the push and the bell

The push goes on the latch side of the main door, where a visitor naturally stands, at the same height as the light switches inside, about 4 ft from the floor. On a door with a safety grille, fit it outside the grille so it can be pressed without reaching through.

The bell goes inside, central: on a passage wall between the bedrooms and the living room, where it can be heard with doors closed and a TV on. A bell fixed just inside the main door is often missed from a far bedroom; one in the kitchen competes with the exhaust fan and the mixer. Avoid the bathroom altogether.

In a bungalow or row house with a gate, a second push at the gate can be wired in parallel with the door push to the same bell. A gate push is outdoors and at mains voltage, and our pushes carry no weather rating, so have the electrician use a weatherproof enclosure rated for outdoor use, run the cable in conduit and fit a 30 mA RCCB on the circuit. Offices, shops and housing societies

Bell pushes are not only for flats. A few common uses beyond the front door:

• Cabins a push on the manager’s desk board that rings a buzzer at the reception or pantry.
• Shops and clinics a push at the counter or the service door, usually with a buzzer rather than a chime.
• Society offices a push at the watchman’s cabin door.
• Not in a toilet an alarm push for an elderly person’s toilet should be a low-voltage call system fitted by an electrician, never a mains bell push in the wet area.

For a building order, a contractor usually fixes one push code across every flat, so spares match. The VIZA Cherry V543 and V545 are among the lowest MRP 1M pushes and match the Cherry plates; KEMPS pushes are chosen where the flats have KEMPS plates. Pricing a complete entrance

A typical flat entrance has a porch light switch and the bell push on one small plate, and the bell inside. In VIZA:

• V545 bell push with indicator ₹93
• V544 10A 1 way switch with indicator for the porch light ₹79
• V1152 Cherry 2M plate ₹65 and V611 concealed box ₹50

The board comes to ₹287 at MRP. With a VIYONA Royal ding dong bell (231) at ₹220, the whole entrance is ₹507, parts only. The KEMPS K174 2 in one module (₹209) on an Orchid K302 2M plate (₹102) with the same box comes to ₹361 for the board. Our switch board price guide prices the rest of the flat.

When the bell push stops working

The usual faults are simple:

• Push sticks or feels soft dust or moisture in the mechanism; replace the module.
• Rain on the push a push in the open gets wet. Our modular pushes are made for indoor boards and carry no weather rating; keep them inside the door frame, and use a weatherproof outdoor enclosure for any exposed push.
• Bell hums or is silent often the bell, not the push.
• Indicator dark the lamp has failed or the supply is off at the MCB.
