30 Watt Sumo LED Bulb: For Shops, Godowns and High Ceilings
Key takeaways
- A Sumo 30W gives about 2,700 to 3,000 lumens (typical; check the carton), about two 15W lamps from one holder.
- Hang it at 11 ft or higher; in a 9 ft room it is glare.
- A 10 × 20 ft shop needs about 4 to 5 Sumo 30W lamps for a bright sales floor.
- At 12 hours a day it uses 10.8 units a month.
- Ours is code 1070 at ₹480; the Sumo 40W is ₹600 and the 50W ₹720.
What the 30W Sumo LED bulb is
A 30 watt LED bulb is not a bigger household lamp. It is a different tool: a tall, cylindrical lamp built to light a shop floor, a godown aisle, a garage or a workshop from a high ceiling. Ours is the VIYONA LED Lamp Sumo 30W, code 1070, at ₹480 MRP, ten to a box. It has the same B22 bayonet cap as a household lamp, so it fits an ordinary batten holder, but its body is much wider and longer than a 9W or 15W lamp.
At the efficiency typical of LED lamps, 30 watts gives roughly 2,700 to 3,000 lumens, about twice what a 15W gives and in the same class as an old 200W filament lamp. That much light from one point is useful in a room with a 12 or 14 ft ceiling, and harsh in a flat with a 9 ft ceiling.
This page covers where the Sumo 30W fits, how high it should hang, how many a shop or godown needs, the units it uses on a working day, and whether the 40W or 50W Sumo is the better buy.
Brightness: the 30W against its neighbours
Our catalogue lists watts and MRP, not lumens, so these are typical figures at 90 to 100 lm/W; the carton has the real number.
Lumens class, typical, by lamp
Watts × 90 to 100 lm/W, bars at the middle of each range. Typical figures, not measurements of our lamps.
So one Sumo 30W gives about as much light as two 15W lamps, from one holder. In a shop that already has a row of holders on the ceiling, changing old lamps for Sumo 30W is the quickest way to brighten the floor without new wiring. Our lumens vs watts guide explains the efficiency figure.
| Code | Lamp | MRP | Typical lumens | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1070 | Sumo 30W | ₹480 | 2,700 to 3,000 | Shops, garages, 11 to 14 ft |
| 1070A | Sumo 40W | ₹600 | 3,600 to 4,000 | Godowns, high roofs |
| 1070B | Sumo 50W | ₹720 | 4,500 to 5,000 | Sheds, very high roofs |
| 1069 | LED lamp 23W | ₹410 | 2,070 to 2,300 | Small shops, halls |
Where a Sumo 30W fits
The Sumo is for large rooms with high ceilings and long working hours:
- Shops and showrooms: kirana, hardware, cloth and mobile shops with 11 to 14 ft ceilings
- Godowns and stores: one lamp over each aisle
- Garages and service bays: light under a raised bonnet
- Workshops and small units: tailoring, carpentry, fabrication benches
- Covered parking and porches with high roofs
- Halls and community rooms with tall ceilings
All of these are indoors or under a roof. For an open yard, a compound or a building face, a lamp in a holder is the wrong fitting; use a flood light, which is sealed and aimed. Our LED flood lights start at 10W (Ultra Prime 1080). For shop lighting as a whole, see LED lights for shop.
Shops, godowns, garages and workshops, not bedrooms.
Height lets the light spread without glare.

How high it should hang
A lamp’s light spreads out as a cone. Hung at 12 to 14 ft, a Sumo’s cone covers a wide floor and nobody looks straight into it. In a home room with a 9 ft ceiling, the same lamp is barely three feet above a standing person’s head: it makes a hot, bright patch below and glare everywhere else.

Drawn by us to show the shape of the light only, not a measurement. Higher mounting spreads the same lumens over more floor.
As a rule of thumb, a Sumo belongs where the ceiling is at least 11 ft. Below that, two 15W lamps or a tube fitting spread the same light more kindly.
How many Sumo 30W lamps for a shop or godown
Lighting practice divides the light needed on the floor by a utilisation of about 0.4 to 0.5 for losses to walls, ceiling and ageing, then by the lumens of one lamp. With a Sumo 30W of about 2,850 lumens:
- 10 × 20 ft shop at 300 lux, a common target for a sales floor: about 11,000 to 14,000 lumens, so 4 to 5 lamps
- 20 × 30 ft godown at 150 lux: about 16,700 to 20,900 lumens, so 6 to 8 lamps, spread over the aisles
- 12 × 24 ft garage bay at 200 lux: about 10,700 to 13,400 lumens, so 4 to 5 lamps
Space the lamps evenly, with the outer ones about half the spacing from the walls, and put the counter or workbench under one of them. Light-coloured walls need fewer lamps than dark shelving. Our how many lights in a room guide works the method step by step.
These counts are planning estimates from typical lumens, not a design. For a large showroom, check the lux with a meter after fitting and add a lamp where it is short.
Units per month on a working day
Shops and godowns run their lights for long hours, which is where the units add up. For one Sumo 30W over 30 days:
One Sumo 30W: units per month
Calculated as watts × hours × 30 ÷ 1,000. Bars to scale. Commercial tariffs are usually higher than domestic.
Four Sumo 30W lamps in a shop open 12 hours a day use 43.2 units a month. The same four holders with old 200W filament lamps would have used 288 units. Our electricity bill guide shows how to price units at your tariff.
30W, 40W or 50W Sumo?
We make the Sumo in three sizes. The printed MRPs:
- Sumo 30W (1070): ₹480
- Sumo 40W (1070A): ₹600
- Sumo 50W (1070B): ₹720
The 30W is the lamp for ceilings of 11 to 14 ft and for shops where lamps are close together. The 40W and 50W suit higher roofs, sheds and godowns where each lamp has to cover more floor. Before choosing the bigger lamp, check whether you can add a holder instead: two 30W lamps spread light better than one 50W.
One more difference to note: the BIS registration printed beside our lamps, R-71026514 under IS 16102 (Part 1), is for the model range 3W to 30W. The 30W is the top of that printed range.
Holder, weight and fixing
The Sumo has a B22 cap, so any sound B22 holder takes it. It is heavier and longer than a household lamp, which changes what a good holder means:
- Batten holder on the ceiling: the best home for it, screwed firmly to a ceiling rose or block.
- Angle holder on a wall: for a lamp pointing out over a counter or a bay.
- Long flex pendant: the lamp swings and pulls on the flex; keep drops short and secure.
Our VIYONA range includes a batten holder with an aluminium ring, 214: ₹30, and the matching angle holder, 213: ₹30. Our batten holder guide covers the full range and the B22 vs E27 guide explains caps.
A cracked holder ring cannot grip a heavy lamp. Replace it before fitting a Sumo, with the MCB off.
Sumo, tube fitting or panel in a shop?
A Sumo is not the only way to light a shop, and it is not always the best one. It depends on the ceiling and the layout:
- Open floor, bare ceiling: Sumo lamps in batten holders. Quick to fit, easy to change, and they reuse the holders most shops already have on the ceiling.
- Long shelves on the walls: tube fittings running along the shelves light the stock face evenly. Our T8 40W fitting (1060) at ₹600 or the T5 20W (1059) at ₹200 suit that job; see our LED tube light range.
- False ceiling: recessed panels sit flush and look finished; a Sumo hanging from a gypsum ceiling looks out of place. See our LED panel range.
Many small shops end up with a mix: Sumo lamps over the open floor and the counter, tube fittings along the display racks. Keep the colour the same across all of them so the stock looks the same wherever it sits.
Mistakes people make with a Sumo
- Fitting it in a bedroom: at a 9 ft ceiling it is glare, not light.
- Inside a closed fitting: it needs open air to keep its driver cool; see why LED bulbs fuse quickly.
- Open to rain: a lamp holder is an indoor part; outside, use a sealed fitting with a printed IP rating, on a 30 mA RCCB.
- On a dimmer or fan regulator: it will flicker and fail early.
- Mixed colours in one shop: a row of identical lamps looks tidy; mixed warm and cool lamps look patched.
Price, box and ordering
