Balcony and Terrace Electrical Points, Planned for the Monsoon

Balcony Electrical Points: Lights, Sockets and Terrace

Balcony electrical points have to work in the dry months and survive the monsoon. Below we plan sit-out balconies, utility balconies and terraces: the light point and switch, which fittings suit covered and exposed spots, outdoor sockets, the washing machine point, terrace lights, the water pump and circuits, with the MRPs of the parts we make in Mumbai.

Key takeaways

  • Light — under the balcony roof, switched from inside the door, ideally with an indicator.
  • Socket — under cover, high on the wall, away from the drain; RCCB on the circuit.
  • Utility balcony — a 16A washing machine socket above the machine, with a 20A switch.
  • Terrace — small 10W to 15W flood lights aimed down; the pump on its own circuit and starter.
  • IP ratings — our catalogue states none for our fittings, so use them under cover or check the code.

Balcony electrical points: the short answer

Balcony electrical points are the light, socket and appliance points planned for a balcony or terrace: a light point switched from inside the door, a socket under cover for a lamp, a phone or festival lights, a 16A point on a utility balcony for the washing machine, and on a terrace, flood lights and often a water pump point.

A balcony is outdoors for some of the year and almost indoors for the rest. In Mumbai and along the coast, rain that never reaches a balcony in October blows sideways onto it in July. That changes which fittings suit it, where a socket can safely go, and how the circuit should be protected.

This guide covers sit-out balconies, utility balconies and open terraces: the light point and switch, which fittings suit covered and exposed spots, outdoor sockets, the washing machine point, terrace lighting, water pumps and circuits, with the MRPs of the parts we make at our works in Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai. Outdoor wiring is a job for a licensed electrician, with the MCB switched off and the circuit tested dead first.

How many electrical points does a balcony need?

A sit-out balcony commonly needs one or two light points and one socket, a utility balcony adds a 16A point for the washing machine and often a second socket, and an open terrace needs two or more light or flood light points, a socket under cover and, where there is a tank, a pump point.

Typical point count by balcony type

Open terrace4–6
Utility balcony3–4
Sit-out balcony2–3

General practice, counting lights, sockets and appliance points; not a rule or a test result. Bars show the upper figure.

Count from use: a sit-out needs light and a phone or lamp socket; a utility balcony holds a washing machine and drying lines; a terrace may host a party, festival lights, plants and a pump. Add one spare point for each: balconies are where people later want a fan, a fountain or decorative lights.

Where should the balcony light point go?

The balcony light point commonly goes on the ceiling or the wall under the balcony’s own roof, well back from the edge where rain blows in, and it is switched from inside the room beside the balcony door, so the light can be turned on before stepping out and no switch sits in the rain.

Two rules: switch inside the door and fitting under cover. A balcony light left on all night is easy to miss from inside, so an indicator beside the switch helps. KEMPS K217, a 6A red indicator module, is ₹95 MRP; for a conventional board, the VIYONA 108 nano indicator lamp is ₹30.

On a long balcony reached from two rooms, a 2 way switch at each door lets either room control the light; our 2 way switch wiring diagram shows the pair. Our switch with indicator guide explains why an indicator glows.

Mark the balcony light on the drawing with the inside switch next to it. A balcony light switched from a board two rooms away is a common, annoying afterthought.

Pump on its own

Own circuit, DP MCB and a starter near the pump.

Which light suits a balcony?

A covered balcony is commonly lit with a surface LED light on the ceiling or an LED lamp in a batten holder, while a spot that driving rain can reach needs a fitting whose maker states an IP rating suited to rain, because a fitting that stays dry in winter may be soaked through in the monsoon.

For a covered balcony, our concealed surface LED light 1006, 6W, is ₹160 MRP, and a VIYONA batten holder 202 (₹26) with a 9W LED lamp 1065 (₹70) is the low-cost option. We also make PVC LED bulkhead lights, 1046 at 12W and 1047 at 20W.

MRP of balcony and terrace fittings we make

Ultra Prime flood 15W (1081)₹550
Ultra Prime flood 10W (1080)₹490
PVC bulkhead 20W (1047)₹480
Big surface 10W (1003)₹360
PVC bulkhead 12W (1046)₹330
Concealed surface 6W (1006)₹160

MRPs from our current catalogue and LED price list, bars to scale with ₹550 as the full bar. Our catalogue states no IP rating for any of these fittings.

Our catalogue states no IP rating for these fittings, so we do not claim one. See bulkhead light and IP65 vs IP66 before choosing for an exposed spot.

Is an outdoor socket safe on a balcony?

An outdoor socket on a balcony is reasonably safe when it sits under cover, high on the wall away from where water collects or splashes, in an enclosure rated by its maker for outdoor use where rain can reach it, on an earthed circuit protected by an RCCB, and with a shutter so dust and insects stay out.

Place it under the roof line, well above floor level and away from the drain and the tap. A modular socket in an ordinary plate is an indoor part; where rain can reach it, it needs a weatherproof enclosure. Our catalogue does not list one, so buy it from a brand that does.

Indoors-side options we make: KEMPS K192, a 6A 3 pin socket with shutter, at ₹110 MRP, and VIZA V1269 at ₹85. A switched socket lets you cut power from the switch beside it; our switched socket guide explains them.

Never use a socket that has been rained on until it is dry and checked. Switch off at the MCB first, and have an electrician look at any socket that trips the RCCB when wet.

What does a utility balcony need for the washing machine?

A utility balcony commonly needs a 16A socket for the washing machine fixed above the machine and to one side of the tap, a 20A switch beside it so the machine can be switched off at the wall, and a light point for evening laundry, all on an earthed circuit with RCCB protection.

A washing machine is a motor and heater load and takes a 16A point. KEMPS K193, a 6A and 16AX universal socket with shutter, is ₹205 MRP; VIZA V263, a 16A socket on a porcelain base, ₹160. A 20A switch with indicator such as VIZA V1248 (₹160) shows when the point is live.

Height and position for this socket are in our switch board height from floor guide. If the machine ever gives a tingle, read washing machine giving shock and stop using it until it is checked.

A washing machine socket below the tap or at floor level is exactly where water collects. Keep it above the machine and away from the drain.

Which terrace lights work best?

Terrace lights commonly work best as small flood lights of around 10W to 15W fixed high on a wall or parapet and aimed down at the floor, with a surface or bulkhead light at the door, rather than one large flood light that glares into neighbouring flats and still leaves corners dark.

Our smallest flood lights are the Ultra Prime 10W (1080) at ₹490 and 15W (1081) at ₹550 MRP. A wall mounting bracket 1082 is ₹90. Aim them down, not out, and use two small lights rather than one big one for a large terrace.

Gate, compound and driveway lighting is covered in our outdoor lights for home guide, and fixing and aiming in how to install LED flood light. Our LED flood light page shows the range.

What does a terrace water pump point need?

A terrace or tank water pump point needs its own circuit from the distribution board with a double pole MCB, a motor starter or DP switch with indicator near the pump so it can be switched off locally, and cable in conduit sized for the run, with all connections in a weatherproof junction box.

The pump is a motor load and starts with a surge, so it should never share a socket circuit. KEMPS K223 is a modular motor starter at ₹595 MRP; VIZA V1287.25, a 25 A motor starter, is ₹580. A DP switch with indicator at the pump shows from a distance that it is running.

Which MCB and starter suit which pump is covered in motor starter for water pump and MCB for water pump. VIYONA 411 is a double pole 10 kA MCB, 6A to 32A, at ₹350 MRP.

A pump on the terrace is wet, metal and outdoors. Switch off at the MCB, prove dead, and leave every connection to a licensed electrician.

Where should festival and decorative lights plug in?

Festival and decorative lights on a balcony or terrace should plug into a fixed socket under cover, ideally a switched socket controlled from inside, rather than an extension lead run out through the balcony door, so the lead is not trapped in the door, walked on or left lying on a wet floor.

Diwali strings, a terrace party or a plant fountain all need power outdoors for a few weeks a year. A socket planned for it costs little at wiring time. Without one, the usual result is a lead through the door and a spike guard on wet tiles.

Strings are small loads, so a 6A socket is enough; switch them from inside and turn them off before rain. Our multi plug vs extension board guide covers the safer choice when a lead is unavoidable.

Which circuit protects balcony and terrace points?

Balcony and terrace points should be on circuits protected by an MCB in the distribution board and by an RCCB, because outdoor points are exposed to water and an RCCB is the device that trips on earth leakage, while the pump and any large flood lights get circuits of their own.

The pattern most electricians follow: balcony lights on the lighting circuit, balcony sockets on a socket circuit with RCCB protection, and the pump on its own. VIYONA 401 is a single pole 10 kA MCB, 6A to 32A, at ₹145 MRP.

An RCCB is the protection against shock from leakage; we do not make RCCBs, so buy one from a brand that lists them. If an RCCB trips when it rains, that is a leak to find, not a nuisance; our RCCB tripping guide sorts the causes. Cable for outdoor runs from our house wire range goes in conduit.

Balcony electrical mistakes to avoid

The most common balcony electrical mistakes are a switch fixed outside in the rain, a light at the open edge of the balcony, a socket at floor level near the drain, a washing machine socket under the tap, a pump sharing a socket circuit, and no RCCB on outdoor circuits.

Each is easy to avoid before plastering: switch outside light at the edge socket near the drain socket under the tap pump on shared circuit no RCCB outdoors.

Before each monsoon, look for water marks around fittings and sockets, and check that cable entries are sealed; our home electrical maintenance checklist covers it. For the room inside the balcony door, see living room electrical points.

If a balcony fitting or socket fills with water, do not touch it. Switch off at the MCB and call a licensed electrician.

FAQs

Which light is best for a balcony?
For a covered balcony, a surface LED light on the ceiling or an LED lamp in a batten holder is common; our 1006 6W concealed surface LED light is ₹160 MRP. A spot that driving rain reaches needs a fitting whose maker states an IP rating for it.
Can I put a normal socket on my balcony?
Only where it stays dry: under the roof, high on the wall and away from the drain and tap, on an earthed circuit with RCCB protection. Where rain can reach it, a socket needs a weatherproof enclosure from a brand that lists one.
Where should the balcony light switch be?
The balcony light switch should be inside the room beside the balcony door, so the light can be turned on before stepping out and no switch sits in the rain. An indicator beside it, such as KEMPS K217 at ₹95 MRP, shows the light is on.
Which socket is used for a washing machine on a balcony?
A washing machine takes a 16A socket fixed above the machine and to one side of the tap, with a 20A switch beside it. VIZA V263, a 16A socket on a porcelain base, is ₹160 MRP and KEMPS K193, a universal socket, ₹205.
How many watts of light is enough for a terrace?
As general practice, one or two flood lights of about 10W to 15W, fixed high and aimed down, light a home terrace without glaring at neighbours. Our Ultra Prime 10W flood light (1080) is ₹490 MRP and the 15W (1081) ₹550.
Are your bulkhead lights waterproof?
Our catalogue does not state an IP rating for our 1046 12W or 1047 20W PVC bulkhead lights, so we do not call them waterproof. Use them under cover, or ask us or your dealer about the exact code before fitting one in the open.
